Question about Briggs & Stratton Tools & Hardware - Others

2 Answers

31HP on a stump grinder. Runs good than dies as if it is out of gas. Has all filters changed, valves set, new electric fuel pump. Fuel tank drained and washed out. Sometimes runs for hours, sometimes just a few minutes. Gas is good. Coil, and spark are good. Every B&S dealer has looked at it. Everyone thinks they fix but doesn't. Engine has appx 250 hrs on it. 120 PSI one piston, a little more on the other. It must be working on stumps to fail which is why no one can see the problem. When it quits, it will restart and run at idle, but not a working speeds. Next day it may run for hours, or just minutes. It is costing me business, and making me look foolish to my customers. Thanks, David 806-441-9472

Hi,
Does this have the electronic ignition module, or the electronic coils???

My thought would be that you have the control module unit and there is a crazy circuit board problem in that....Don't think you have a fuel problem, it would be more predictable....what you have is an electronic problem...those darn electronic coils can drive ya nuts also...

Those types of problems can be very frustrating and expensive....a new engine looks to be somewhere around $2500.00 so to this point you are well under a new engine...

David,

Has anyone checked the valve clearance on the engine?

Also, sometimes simple things will make the engine perform intermittently. Try running it without the gas cap on when it has died. It could be a clogged gas cap so the engine is not ventilating.

Yes, If there is nothing wrong with the engine, the next step would be to look at the cutter you're using. How often do you sharpen or change the teeth? Are you using carbide teeth, etc.

I'd like to suggest checking out these two websites. The first is info on a good cutting wheel and the second is the US dealer if you're in the US and are interested: >>>>http://www.multi-tip.com.au/ <<<<
    >>>>http://www.alpinemagnum.com/multi-tip.ht... <<<<

Please copy and paste these web addresses into your browser to view.

Hope this helps. If it does, I'd appreciate a 4 thumbs up. Thanks,

    Handie Andie

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

When it runs fir a while it dies

Car runs then dies, left set it will run again and then die.
sounds like a fuel starvation.

I had similar problem on an old sunbeam. after doing
everything else, turned out to be paint inside gas tank
was flaking off and plugging up the hole in the tank bottom
where the gas line attached.

Had a similar problem on a Datsun. Turned out a small piece
of chewing gum wrapper foil got inside the gas tank and formed
itself into a perfect fitting cover for the fuel pump impeller intake.
This was so long ago it was the first in-tank fuel pump I had seen.

Note neither of these situations would have been fixed by
replacing the in line fuel filter.

Good Luck

Air in fuel line. changed all the filters. put a new in-line filter before the fuel pump. engine runs for a few miles and then dies. i have to bleed the air out of the fuel pump and then it will start and...

I'm a little confused. You changed all the fuel filters? How many do you have? If you have a late model vehicle, then your fuel pump is in the fuel tank. How did you put an in line filter before the pump. Is your vehicle gas or diesel?

sometimes the tank decomposes from the inside flaking off and clogging filters, pumps, etc. always a good idea to completly remove tank and flush to check for same when changing the fuel pump. if that's your problem, you will need a new gas tank

Stalls out like its not getting gas

the valve that you are depressing is not an air bleeder it is a shredder valve used to check fuel pressure on, you most likely need a new fuel pump
