Check your battery voltage, this can occur with low voltage. Charging the battery often resolves this issue.

My Garmin 421s works perfect but sonar goes off with notification that the tranducer is off. A tap on the case would partly restore service. What is the cause of this failure?

Short in system. if in warranty send to manufacturer. If not open the case and see if any components and wiring are damaged or wire came lose from mother board.

Hi Lakshmaan:
The first thing I would check would be the electrical connections from the transducer, and the transducer wire.

How to solve sonar failure(Showing on Display) in garmin 160c fishfinder.

I would guess that "sonar failure" would mean that no signal is being received from the transducer.
Trouble shoot accordingly.

I am thinking about buying a garmin 451 chartplotter, can I connect this to my garmin 160c fishfinder for sonar capability?

Hi James!
According to the owner's manual, the 451 can be used as a fishfinder when connected to a transducer. I would contact Garmin directly to see if the ducer from your 160c is compatible with a 451. If it is, you're in business! You'll likely have to cut/splice cable, but it'd be far easier than replacing the thru-hulls. (The 451 does come with transducers.)

It has been my experience that Garmin is REAL good when it comes to answering questions from consumers.
Good luck!

Display reads sonar timed out

check the battery voltage as low voltage can cause the unit to display errors and prevent the sonar from starting up. This unit is more sensitive to low voltage than many other electronics. If charging the battery or replacing it with a known good battery doesn't work then contact garmin for a replacement of your fishfinder.

Can I get an inboard transducer for my Garmon 160C fish finder?

Yes you can. You would need Garmin part #: 010-10224-00. You can order this part off the Garmin website if you do a search for 160 and look under the accessories.

To wireup 160c Garmin fishfinder, there are seven clored wires. The book shows red and Yellow to hot. Black and blue to ground. Do the white, green and brown connect? Can the black and yellow be connected...

You only need the red and black wires to supply power to the unit. The red positive wire goes to a positive terminal on your battery or positive side of a bus bar or switch, the black negative wire goes to the negative terminal on the battery or negative common bus bar. Do not try to earth the black wire to an aluminum boat hull... You are asking for trouble! Best to run the black wire straight back to the negative battery terminal or negative bus bar that is wired to the negative battery terminal. The other colored wires on the 160C plug are used for interfacing with NMEA2000 compatible devices, like a compatible GPS.
