Thank you for your suggestion, but I can't figure out how to change the settings that you mention. What settings? for the printer or for Windows XP? Where are these settings? I can't find them in my HP software. What I have learned to do is to turn on my printer at the day's start and keep it on (at the ready) all day. Then, after the first printing the form is not loaded again that day. I don't turn it on until the next day. This still seems odd, since I used the printer for more than two years without any printing of the alignment form unless I changed one or both cartridges. I'm still puzzled!

ok i need you to follow these steps.

1.unplug the USB cable from the printer.

2.take one of the alignment pages and put it face down on the glass of the scanner and press the scan button.

3.when it is doing this the on light will blink. wait until the on light stops blinking.

4.turn thr printer off and than turn it back on. it should not print another alignment page.

If it does you will need to buy new HP cartiges.

If they have been refilled multipyle time sometime the printer will not register that the printer has been aligned already.

    let me know what happens.

Make sure all the protective tape on the Black cartridge has been removed. Also are the inks re-filled? I have seen many re-filled cartridges fail in a similar maner.

Hello,

Ok you already tried the majority of the troubleshooting process. The next thing I would try personally is removing the software/driver for the printer and reinstalling.

This typically fix's an unusual problem like that, as the cause could be on the software side of the printer and not the hardware itself.

Post back if you have any further question's or comments. Thank you for choosing Fixya.

Changing ink default to BLACK

Not possible.
Epson uses the black cartridge mostly, but also adds color to the black printing in order to keep the color inks from drying in the print jets on the printhead.
They also make lots of money that way...

Can't print because of align printer message

No problem, START->SETTINGS->PRINTERS AND FAXES->right click on your printer icon->PROPERTIES->GENERAL TAB->PRINTING PREFERENCES->SERVICES TAB->OPEN HP TOOL BOX->CALIBRATE DEVICE...
And the just follow the directions, then it should allow you to be happy again, and print your works of art.
Good luck my friend, please leave a rating, thank you kindly

Have just unpacked new HP Photosmart C4200 All-in-One Cannot get machine to accept cartidges which werre supplied with the printer

NOTE: The product must be on before you can insert the print cartridges.
  1. Open the print cartridge door. Figure 7: Opening the print cartridge door c00880893.jpg
  2. Make sure the print carriage moves to the right. If it does not move to the right, turn the device off, then turn it back on again.
  3. Open the packaging and remove the tape from both cartridges. Figure 8: Removing the tape c00880894.jpg CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or re-tape the cartridges.
  4. Hold the cartridges with the HP logo on top.
  5. Insert tri-color cartridge in the left cartridge slot and the black cartridge in the right cartridge slot . Figure 9: Inserting the print cartridges c00880895.jpgc00880896.jpg
  6. Push the cartridge firmly into the slot until it snaps into place.
  7. Close the print cartridge door.
Step eight: Align the print cartridges When a new print cartridge is installed, the product aligns the cartridge. Align the print cartridges at any other time by using the software installed with the product. Aligning the print cartridges ensures high-quality output. NOTE: If a print cartridge is removed and reinserted, the product will not prompt for an alignment. The product memory retains the alignment values for that print cartridge. Follow these steps to align newly installed print cartridges.
  1. When prompted, make sure that plain, white letter or A4 paper is loaded in the input tray, and then press the button next to OK . The alignment page prints.
  2. Lift the lid. Place the top of the alignment page face-down on the front, right corner of the scanner glass. Figure 10: Placing the alignment page c00880898.jpg
  3. Close the lid.
  4. Press the button next to OK . When the On button stops flashing, the alignment is complete and the page can be removed.

Change ink cartridge

go to start>control panel> printers and faxes>preferences>services> ( This is how I bet to services on my own HP.) There may be another route for you. At any rate you need to get to the services tab to figure out wihich cartridge is low, if you don't know. When you do know, just open the lid of your printer while it has power and the cartridges will move to the position where you can remove them. Just gently lift out the old cartridge, peel off the protect tape on the new one, being careful not to touch the copper contact area, and insert it in the slot.DO not leave the new cartridge standing out of the pacage more than thirty minutes. It should slip right in and you will know that it is snug and in place.. If your printer does not then automatically print an calibration page within a few minutes, you should do so, from the same area where you checked your cartridges above. Good luck. This aligns the new cartridges and guarantees a good color print.

New Ink cartridges registering as empty ...

Is it an HP printer? We had the same problem at work with print cartridges purchased at Staples. They have a major quality control problem. Your new print cartridge may be empty or dried out (died on the shelf). It's my problem at work, as I have over 80 HP deskjets, and Purchasing still insists on buying the Staples cartridges rather than the HP.

Sometimes if you shake a print cartridge really hard it may correct the problem. However, I would buy or borrow a black HP print cartridge and try it out in your printer. Works almost every time on the job. Good luck.
