Re: barely visible picture and no sound
2 things the easy fix would be the screen switch is jammed a little circle next to where the door close you will need to pry the switch out and the second fix (your backlight (inverter) is out (better off buying a new unit)

just to the right of the source button there is what appears to be a recessed small button (approx 1/8"dia). It is a safety stud for an internal safety switch. If the small stud is set to deep the screen will shut off. It should be just about flush with the surface of the player. Mine was visibly crooked and jammed down almost inside. Pulled it up, made minor adjustment and the player works just fine.
The unit is failing and is not worth repairing. There is either a short in the wiring that leads to the screen, the inverter board os failing, or the decoder is failing. These are all hardware problems.
There are several tests to find where the problem may be, but the average consumer doesn't have the ability or access to parts to fix these issues.
Your unit has it seems to have developed a video problem. it could be in the video switching IC or the video processor. Its going to need a trained technician, who knows how to use an ocilliscope to find the video problem.. Good Luck
I have the same model of DVD player and sometimes that will happen to me, and when it does I will move the screen up and down, and the picture always comes back for me, you can try this but I dont know if you have the same problem as me.
