Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

1 Answer

I have a new motorhome and the air conditioner only reduces the inside air temperature by 2 degrees on a hot day. e.g. outside air temp 26 degrees inside temp 29 degrees. After 2 hours of a/c running with door and windows shut inside air temp is 27 degrees. Dealer says the air conditioner is ok as air coming out of ducts is 3 degrees as required. I believe a larger a/c is required.

Can you tell me what size/make of motorhome you have? Certainly doesn"t sound right to me, and I've been working on them for over 15yrs. Whether it's a 13,500 BTU or 15,000 BTU, it should be plenty as long as motorhome has any insulation at all. I assume you have central air from ceiling?
The manufacturer usually states that the AC unit will supply 20F below ambient.
Is compressor staying engaged all this time?

Why does the unit keep on switching off after running for 2 minutes

Do not know what brand or model your aircon unit is? Sounds as if the temperature you want your unit to run at has already been reached. You need to follow these steps:
- select the temperature you want
- select the icicle icon for cool or thermometer icon for hot.
- select "auto" for your unit to cut in, or to cut off to keep your desired room temp.
For example - hot day 26 degrees and you want the temp in the room to drop to 19 degrees - the unit will shut off once it reaches 19 degrees if it is set to "Auto". Hope this gives you some clues to get it working. Please tick my this helped me box if my tips work. Good luck Gerri.

I have a Lennex heat pump unit which was installed in 2008. Our area (Savannah, GA) has experienced some abnormal cold temps lately. Yesterday, I noticed the outside of the unit had frost on the unit. ...

Heat pumps are the same as an A/C unit only it works in reverse. Instead of blowing cold air inside and hot air outside it blows hot air inside and cold air outside. The heat being blown inside is extracted form the cold air outside. Its called Latent heat Latin for hidden. Believe it or not even though its 20 degrees outside there is still heat in the air. Example if you want to drop the temperature of a freezer from 20 to 10 degrees you have to remove heat .I know your getting unusal weather and that is the problem. Heat pumps can only work no lower then around 20 degrees outside.Heat pumps are never used above the freeze line. With your unusal temperatures thats basically where you are now. Ride it out. When your temps rise a little your be fine. Im in Chicago.

My roof air will only cool down about 10 degrees below outside temp. What should I ckeck first?

On a hot day (80+) check the temperature difference between the indoor coil's inlet and outlet, it should be 20 degrees lower under normal circumstances, if the air temperature is lower than that you may need to clean the indoor coil fins.
Next check the same thing at the outdoor coil; there should be about a 30 degree rise in temperature when the air exits the coil. If the temperature is higher you may need to clean the outdoor (condenser) coil.

The AC doesn´t work when outside temp goes 100 degrees and above

Try using a garden hose to wash down the condensor coil (the coil that is exposed to the outside air).
During the cooler times when it seems to be working, check the temperature difference of the air coming out against the temperature of the air coming in (room temperature air). The temperature should be approximately 16 to 22degF difference. If you are not getting at least 16degF air, you most likely need to have your unit serviced to see if professionial cleaning or a recharge is needed. If you are getting the temperature difference but not getting the amount of cooling you need during hot weather, it could be a capacity problem. You can perform a quick test by using the calculator on this site:

I hope you find this information helpful. Good Luck! :-)

Room at 84. unit set at 65. outside is 94 degrees.

I brows the web to see the specs of your unit.In that case the unit cannot cool down the room temperature, you must consider the following:The volune of the room, it might be exceeded the specified capacity, the thermal isolation of the room, must be shield from leaks, and the materials used, the absorption of the matterial at first operation, the materials around the area will absorb coolness prior to room air, and the ambient temperature outside may affect the performance of the system,If too hot outside put a better thermal isolation inside.that helps? need thumbs up... sams_Ew0rks**

Demby portable Capacity: 11,000 BTU air conditioner

This unit is sized to approx a 35 square metres area at a normal 2.4 metre ceiling height. All I would recomend without actually seeing the problem is to check this measurement and close all windows and doors. The unit is most likely undersized, but check the air temp coming off the unit. It should be about 10 degrees.

Humidity factor up to 92 degrees ,although it keeps the temperature down to 69 degrees

HMMM, I am not quite sure exactly what your setup is. My first question is how are you reading humidity and is it accurate. Second if you are maintain 69 degrees, is it hot and humid outside? If your unit is low on charge, the evaporator (indoor) coil will maintain a warmer temp reducing its ability to reduce humidity but if it is hot outside, you would not be keeping at 69 degrees. If this is a new system my best guess is that the system is over sized. I know a lot of people want a big AC unit to cool down quick but if the unit comes on, runs for 2 minutes and shuts off, It is not running long enough to remove any humidity from the air, thus proper sizing is extremely important. Let me know exactly what your situation is and lets see if we can get it fixed.
