Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have had this model for over three years without any trouble. I recently added an LG Blu-ray player via HDMI connection. AlI seemed well for a couple of weeks, then one evening while watching a DVD the screen displayed multi colour narrow vertical pinstripes. I turned the television off and on and all seemed well. The next day when I turned the television on the same problem occured, now the set just just starts with this problem and the screen fades to a dark colour. The audio is fine as I hear the programmes on all channels and on the Blu-ray. Can anyone tell what has possibly happened to the set?

Hi William,
Vertical colored lines is very common problem in plasma tv. Plasma is the most hard working type of tv nowadays and most of them encountered problem after 3 years of service which is caused by overheating of the boards.
In your case the symptoms is caused by faulty control boards and/or the power suppy boards. First, your unit must be check from bad connections inside, it will do the same symptoms. You must take it apart and pull-out all of the cable connectors from the power supply board, control board, sustain boards and inspect, re-insert and ensure its connections. You must also check bad solder joints(cracked/dried/cold solder) in the power supply board feeding the control board. The power supply board is the warmest board among others and prone from bad solder joints. You must work in the brightest area or you may used table/portable lamp and magnifying glass to spot it in the board and then re-solder.
Sustain boards is also going to be checked for malfunction. This boards process the picture coming from the control board and feed to the panel. Once gone to malfunction, same symptoms will be encountered.
This kind of symptoms is not a DIY and quite technical because a lot of boards involved. I would advice you to send it in or look for a qualified tv technician to troubleshoot the unit.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

How do I hook-up Netflix through a Sony Blu-Ray player and a LG television

If your Sony Blu-Ray player and LG TV are recent models, each should have an HDMI cable connection. HDMI is an method to connect your digital video and audio devices with just a single combined cable. In the case of your LG TV, using an HDMI cable will allow you to send the HD video signal to your TV's screen, and allow you to hear the sound through the TV's speakers.
Your LG TV may have multiple HDMI connectors, to allow other devices to send signals to your TV, such as a cable box or satellite box or digital video recorder (DVR). Your Sony Blu-Ray player will usually have just a single HDMI connector.
Purchase an HDMI cable from your local electronics store. There are different versions of the HDMI specification, and you should get a cable that you can verify is certified for the HDMI version 1.4 specification.
Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the Blu-Ray player, and the other end into one of the HDMI connectors on the TV, noting which one you selected.
When you turn on your Sony Blu-Ray and your LG TV, you should use the remote for the LG TV to select the input source. Your LG remote should allow you to select the HDMI input connector you used, at which point you should see the display of a DVD playing on the Blu-Ray player. If you cannot hear the sound, use the LG remote to increase the TV volume.

You can do this two ways.

Way #1 connect your cable box to your a/v receiver with one hdmi cable. Connect your blu ray player to your a/v receiver with a second hdmi cable. Lastly, connect a third hdmi cable from the a/v receiver to the television. (3 hdmi cables needed this way)

Way #2 connect your cable box to your television with one hdmi cable. Connect your blu ray player to your television with a second hdmi cable. Connect your a/v receiver to your television with a RCA/composite a/v cable or with a fiber optic cable. Connect your cable box to your a/v receiver with a fiber optic cable or RCA/composite a/v cable. Lastly connect your blu ray player to your a/v receiver with a fiber optic or RCA/composite a/v cable. This method takes 2 hdmi cables and three sets of fiber optic and or RCA/composite a/v cables.

Can't get more specific than that without having the a/v receiver's model number, type of cable box, and television model number. Hope this helps.

The "handshake" between the television and the blu ray player has been lost. This happens a lot when connecting with hdmi. Sometimes a hot swap will work to remedy this. That is turning off and unplugging both your television and bluray player while removing the hdmi cable from both for 30 seconds to one minute. Reconnect the bluray player to the hdmi cable and then to the television. Plug them both back in and turn the television on first then the bluray player. Your television may need a factory reset going into the service menu or the board the hdmi ports are located on might need to be replaced if all of the hdmi ports are not responding. You can connect with component if possible in the meantime.

I have a Sampo 42 inch plasma multimedia display monitor model PME-42S6 (s). I got a blu-ray player and connected it via the AV1 inout. The screen is now green and red. What can I do to fix this?

If you have a Blu-Ray player you should be connecting it via HDMI, which is the only way to receive a full HDMI picture on your television. But you may connect it via the component inputs if you do not have an HDMI cord. The component cable consists of five color coded cords of (1) red and (1) white cable for the audio, and (1) blue, (1) green, and (1) red cable for the picture. Connect the Blu-Ray using this cable and you will be fine.

42LG50 TV - Intermittant sound problems with blu-ray HDMI input

You say this doesn't happen on regular cable or when playing a regular DVD. Hmm. Is this Blu-Ray player connected by simplink? HDMI is a bi-directional format cable, so  there are cases in setups where your tv can send commands to your blu-ray player and vice versa. It could be a problem with your blu-ray player that it is sending for some odd reason a mute command to your tv. Or is processing a command that your TV interprets to be a mute command when playing blu-rays. Because if it was the TV itself chances are you'd see this when watching a normal DVD or on cable as well. Since you say you're not, it leads me to believe the issue lies with the blu-ray player itself.

I've hooked up my LG 47" 1080p widescreen to a LG HE903PAW audio receiver / 5 disc dvd player with upscaling capabilities. I have tested the speaker system and everything's connected properly....

I was talking with LG on virtually the same problem. I have a samsung blu-ray player hooked up via HDMI. Even though the blu-ray is outputting 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1, the LG is only outputting 2 channel unless you switch to pro logic. LG states that this is a known problem and that you are to return the system to where you bought it for a replacement. Call the 1-800 number and they should give you the same answer.
