Question re: Avolusion HDDGear Pro 500GB 16MB Cache 7200RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive: it fell off my desk onto a carpeted floor and now will not allow me to access my data on it. It makes a noise as if trying to work, but doesn't. Anyone had this problem? Is it fixable, data retrievable or transferrable at this point? Thanks!

The bad News, when it fell it most likely knocked the heads or disk out of alignment or broke something inside. Good News - It may still be possible to recover the data on it but that will have to be done by a data recovery specialist company that can take the drive apart and read the Disk plates individually to reconstruct it. Bad News -That process will most likely cost more than the computer did as it is a very specialized field and requires very special conditions.

First check that there are no problems with the drive. You can do that with the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/

If it checks out ok then you can try to recover your data with Recuva it's free http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Or if you need data recovery help this a good choice for low cost and fast data recovery. All data recovery work is performed remotely over the internet from a boot cd that you download: http://FreeDataRecovery.us

Try this:

1. Turn off the power supply to the hard drive.
2. Turn off your PC/laptop.
3. Connect the hard drive to the PC/laptop.
4. Turn on both devices.

It worked with mine.

You could also try installing Seagate Manager which can check for errors on the drive.

Sorry, but if your hard disk fell down and now isn't regognized by the computer the most possible situation is that the disk is destroyed.

Knocked over Seagate 500GB FA Pro Makes Beep Noise/Can't Connect

it sounds like the disc (inside the hard drive casing) has become jammed or what is known as "stickation". the best way to unstick the disc is usually another sharp blow. the best way to do this is to remove the drive from the external casing and, while holding it by one side, strike the other side downward onto a hard surface like a wood desk. do not strike it on metal or cement as you may cause more damage. make sure the surface is softer than the drive casing. it sounds extreme but it has worked for me on several occasions.
