It's probably one of two things:1) They pressure contacts that engage the electromagnet may have burnt carbon deposits similar to spark plugs. One needs to clean in between the contact (two on each side) while putting slight pressure as the contacts meet.2) The spring mechanism that engages these contacts has snapped at the securing point, thus not able to put enough pressure to engage these contacts that power the electromagnet.
For some reason it's always the left side.
If the toaster is more than 5 years old I would suggest buying a new on , even though these toasters are very reliable. As the crumbs that left inside are so powdery and coats every surface inside, as well.

SOURCE: the left side of the toaster does not stay

There are two printed circuit boards inside front of toaster - One PC board for each side. The circuit board on the side that won't latch down in the "toasting" position , is defective. Now, does anyone have access to a schematic for this toaster?

My Cuisinart Toaster's left side lights up

I repaired a problem with one of the sides of my CPT-180 toaster that was fixed by replacing C1. This may be the same component that Stan was referring to, as the C1 capacitor on the circuit board I was having problems with was bulging. I've attached some photos showing C1 bulged out compared to C1 on the good board.
C1 is the main power supply capacitor and if it goes bad, the circuit board power supply won't function correctly. This can lead to a broad spectrum of problems like the lever not staying down or the toasting control/timing circuits malfunctioning. If you replace the capacitor, it is best in most cases to replace with the same value as the orginal (220uf on my toaster)---you can usually get a replacement capacitor at Fry's Electronics. Replacing with a higher capacitance may be acceptable, but you should understand the impact to the rest of the circuit before you substitute a higher capacitance value. The voltage rating and temperature rating of the replacement capacitor should be the same or greater or the capacitor will fail quickly. Note the max temperature rating of capacitor C1 is +105C---toasters get hot (duh!) and the temperature around the circuit board of this model gets quite warm, so the temperature rating of the capacitor is critical. Finally, make sure the substitute capacitor fits when installed (requires soldering) and does not interfere with surrounding circuitry or other toaster mechanics when the circuit board is put back in place.

How to hook up becket oil furnace

On the top right hand side of the burner is the controller, on the right side ther are 4 contact screws, closest to the fire are the thermostate wires dosn,t matter which one goes where, two from thermostate go on these two contact screws. The two contact screws far away from the flame are for the two wires from the cad cell dosn't matter which one where. All that is left is 120 volt ac power which shouldn't be hard to see where they go.

Toast will not stay down in toaster when lever is depressed, actually lever will not stay down. how to fix it?

Most times this is caused by a build up of crumbs in the bottom of the toaster. There is a small electo magnet that holds the lever down, if it gets covered in crumbs it won't work. Take it outside turn it upside down and bang the heck out of it till everything comes out. If this does not work then check and make sure the magnet is still attatched inside. Other than that, this toaster gets terrible reviews from folks with issues just like yours. I can only assume the electronics are failing on these units far to quickly. It can be repaired if yuou send it in to the manufacture but that is really not economical. I hope the upside down banging cures the problem.

Left side does not drop toast down, elements work.

I had to take my toaster outside and clean out the sidees of each slot. There was debris baked on and it had the wire frame stuck. Once I cleaned, scraped and emptied out the junk, the toaster works fine.

The left side of the toaster will not go down when I push the Toast/Cancel button. The right side works fine. Any help is appeciated.

My toaster started having this same problem. After several tries of unplugging and replugging with no luck, I decided to try to take it apart. Without a special screwdriver, you can't remove the bottom. I did remove the crumb trays and scraped a few pieces of stuff that had baked itself to the sides and bottom. After carefully cleaning both sides, I took it back in and replugged. Everything works fine. The left side is used more than the right and had debris built up. I think it must have stuck the wire frame that is supposed to move the toaster up and down. I used a long screwdriver to scrape out the debris. It was burnt on. MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE PLUG FROM POWER BEFORE STICKING ANYTHING METAL IN THE TOASTER.

Right side stopped working

In the manual:

Check to see if the toaster is plugged in; if it is, unplug the toaster, then plug it back in again.

A tone will sound when the toaster is plugged into a live electrical outlet.

If no tone sounds, check the electrical circuit the toaster is connected to -

is a fuse blown or a circuit-breaker tripped in your home?

At least with "unplugging and plug it back again in the electrical outlet" the right side of our toaster works again. The tone that should sound with plugging in didn't work...

The solution I got from the FixYa team was: "Get a new toaster." Which is how I ended up with 4 new toasters that don't work. I'm glad I didn't PAY for THAT answer.
