Many flashguns deigned for film cameras - even really expensive ones - will not work with DSLRs.
I have a perfectly good pentax gun that cost me almost £300. It is fanstastic on my TOTR Pentax SLR but will only blat at maximum power on my Pentax DSLR. I had to spend another almost £300 to buy the new gun that will work with all the bells and whistles on my DSLR.
It looks as though Canon work theirs the same way.

Canon Speedlite 580ex ii - won't work with camera

Caroline, you should try to set the camera on "M" and the flash in 2nd curtain flash sync.

Or set flash in ATG wireless IR ETTL Slave modes and pop-up the flash on Canon EOS-70D.

No. The PF30X is a dedicated unit, specifically for the particular brand of camera. A Canon unit, such as the one you have, will not work in auto mode on a Nikon camera.

Canon 5D and canon 40D are they type A or type B cameras as per 380 EX manual

Hi Bruce,
You have the latest cameras and they will work with ETTL II with Canon 430EX/550EX/580EX and 580EX II. Earlier models use ETTL and films use TTL.
Hope they are helpful.

I have a Sunpak PF30x flash and I lost my manual, is there anywhere on the internet where I can download it for free? And also what does the EV Adjust mean?

http://www.sunpak.jp/english/support/download/index.html

EV Adjust is Exposure Value Adjust. It lets you deliberately over- or under-expose the picture for effect.

Can i use my sunpak 4000af with my canon rebel t1i?

The Sunpak PZ 4000 and 5000 were made for film cameras. I have one for my EOS film cameras. It works just fine. I know this series of flashes was not made for the digital cameras. It likely will not harm your camera if the flash is designed for your camera brand. But some functions will not work.
For example, do not use a flash for Minolta on a Nikon.
You risk damaging your cameras electronics or frying the flash.
Get their PZ 20, PZ 30, PZ40 or PZ 42X for your digital camera.

I need a manual

Google this: canon 400d manual You should find a PDF file you can download. But really, that flash is pretty simple to use. Just stick the camera on automatic and it does its thing.

Sunpak PZ 4000AF for Canon EOS 35mm SLR body

Canon digital uses E-TTL metering for best flash results, the older Sunpak unit isn't compatible with this, so it is not fully compatible. It may work in manual mode - but won't be as good as a more modern compatible digital flash like the Canon or Metz (eg 58AF1 Canon) versions.

Canon I use the Canon XTi and sunpak 544

The Rebel XTi has a sophisticated communication protocol between the camera and a dedicated flash. Only ETTL-II capable flashes can benefit from all the features the engineers at Canon thougt out. This means that with the otherwise superb Sunpak you won't be able to emit autofocus assist pulses, red-eye reduction pulses, the camera won't increase or reduce the flash intensity for bracketing, zoom lens settings won't be reflecting on the flash illumination angle, and so on. But! Set your Canon to full manual (125th sec), set Sunpak to auto, take one of the working apertures according to your taste (depth of field, etc.) and set the same aperture on the camera, and shoot. You still can use bounce flash. I am not sure about second curtain flash, I suspect it won't be possible. Both tele kit and milky filter in front of the flash head are of great help, you don't need to worry about the differences these make in flash intensity. Always keep in mind that the flash makes good exposure according to the given working aperture and, as long as you set the same aperture on the camera, the subject will be correctly illuminated. (I have a Sunpak 522 and a 455 and employ them this way, with success, on my XSi.) Of course you can set set the flash in full manual (M/PR/MD), using the left side, set knob and calculator dial, and this is the only way if you want to make series of shots, because the flash can only make bursts if the power is reduced to at least 1/16th. Good light, Laszlo
