Fridge warm, most of the freezer is still frozen but the top was defrosting. The ice maker is still working but some of the ice was not frozen all the way. All fans are working, damper door is working. there was some ice on the coils in the back of the freezer. Not sure what to do.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

This statement: All fans are working, damper door is working. there was some ice on the coils in the back of the freezer is telling you that the refrigerator is not defrosting properly. Since you did not include a model number I can only speak in genrric vs "unit specific:" terms.

Here is what you can do to get things cooled down temporarily. Unplug the unit, remove the freezer contents and direct an external fan into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. This makes a water mess so be prepaired. After the 2 hours clean up the residual water and return the unit to normal service. It should work fine for about 2 days and then start the warming routine again. If it does wok fine after doing the manual defrost... you will need to service the automatic defrost problem.

If you provide a model number in a response I can provide some troubleshooting and parts infromation specific to your unit. Troubleshooting will require using a meter to measure resistance and possibly power.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

FRIDGE TO WARM MODEL ED22DWXTNOO

It's a circulation problem so either the fan in the back of the freezer(circulates freezer and blows cold into fridge) or the defrost element. If the element is faulty the rear ices up and air won't flow. If fan is faulty it's not blowing the cold air. Remove rear panel if no ice it's the fan if its full of ice it needs the defrost element(usually get termination sensor also depending on type) If you open the freezer door and hold in the doorswitch you should hear the fan running if its working.

GE 17.2 freezer on top fridge on bottom. Freezer is cold, but fridge is warm. Help!

Is there any frost buildup on the rear panel inside the freezer? If so you have a defrost problem of a bad defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer/ control board. If no frost then you probably have a clogged defrost drain. Remove the rear panel to access drain hole.

Hello,

Very likely the vents are freezing due to the defrost drain is blocked so instead of the water from the defrost draining into the pan on the bottom as its supposed to its pooling in the freezer and freezing over the air vents.
This tip i wrote will help ya to clear the drain. http://www.fixya.com/support/r9945686-check_when_refrig_cools_ok_but_leaks

2. blower fan failed, if it has one
3. defrost limit switch failed..
i dont think it is #2 but 1 or 3
last but not least your defrost heat coil has failed

Why does my ice cube maker quit working and temperature in freezer is the same as fridge.

ice maker will not work if freezer is too warm . it must be 15 deg or lower and if fresh food is that cold then the food is frozen. the freezer needs to be 0 to 5 deg and the fresh food side 38 def is best . / you may be having a defrost problem and the cold coil is packed with ice and prevent ing air flow .. ck for ice in back of freezer .. mm

Fridge is not becoming cool, fridge is running

Hi, I once had this problem. My freezer and refrigerator were both warm, but I could still hear it running. When the repair guy came out he immediately checked the back interior of the freezer (had to remove a panel) and it was entirely frozen solid with ice. He said the defroster had stopped working, which caused the coils to all freeze. It took him about an hour to get all of the ice off. He replaced the defroster. Total cost was around $250.00. Works fine now.

Hi!!

The Ice Maker and the Freezer/Fridge part of the unit work separate, that's why you get the ice made but the freezer can't keep it frozen.

Most likely the condenser, located in the back of the freezer is all frozen and covered with ice pluggin up the air ducts to the fridge, preventing it from cooling.

One quick solution will be unplugging the refrigerator and allowing it to defrost on it’s own or remove the freezer's back panel and using a heat gun or hair dryer to melt the ice, this will take about 20 to 30 min..

There are various reasons this type of problem:

The temp. controls are not set properly. Set controls according to manufacturer recomendation.
The small fan in the freezer is not working,
The defros timer is not working or,
The defrost heater coil is busted.

Once the ice is melted, plug unit back in and check for unit reactions. You should be able to hear the freezer fan working. Also, you'll hear about 4 to 6 times a day the defrost heater melting the ice in the back of the freezer, if NOT, check heater coil for continuity.

Don't forget to rate this post. Good Luck.

Both top sections fridge/freezer of my side by side are not cold

Sounds like a defrost problem. Remove food from freezer section, take the back wall out after removing shelves, and use a hair blower to melt off the ice and frost. Most likely you need to replace the defrost heater.

Freezer/fridge won't get cold enough

Madezmom, you have a defrost issue. If your model starts with 106 you more than likley have a bad defrost bi-metal, I will attach a picture of bad one. This sits on the evaporator in the freezer section behind the panel. You will have to remove the shelves and remove the back panel. Defrost the evaporator completely. The part number for the bi-metal is 2196155. See if yours is bulged like the one in the attached photo. If so, that's your problem..Catriver..post back.
