There is no power button on the 2720...there is a rocker switch on the side. I tried what you said, but it just keeps re-booting.

  • bad18 May 22, 2011

I just did the Find button thing and said yes to the erase all data. It still re-boots

  • bad18 May 22, 2011

Once again, this is NOT a nuvi! There is no battery. This is a color street pilot 2720

  • bad18 May 22, 2011

So now what? This new map 2012.10 really screwed me up

It is not a nuvi. It is a street pilot 2720. I already downloaded the map update that became available today. The update went thru without a hitch. When I re-booted the 2720, the Garmin main screen came on, then said loading maps with a graph bar on the bottom of the screen. As soon as that showed up the unit re-bootedand is now in a loop over and over. It re-boots too fast for the computer to see it.

  • bad18 May 23, 2011

Holding the top left of the screen does not work. I cannot access the files because the 2720 re-boots before the computer can see it. If I could access it, I would have removed the file. Any other way?

  • bad18 May 23, 2011

It does not show the message Loader Loading during power up...it shows the garmin startup logo

  • bad18 May 23, 2011

I tried that also...Do you really want to erase all user data?? I hit yes and it just re-boots

  • bad18 May 23, 2011

I even tried the master reset with the same results

  • bad18 May 23, 2011

I just tried that. It only stops for a very short time then moves on

  • bad18 May 23, 2011

I just called Garmin. They said there is nothing they can do...the unit is out of production, so they cannot fix it or replace it, so i'm screwed!!

  • bad18 May 23, 2011

I have another 2720 that lost the sound, so I got this one. If I knew what part to snatch out of it, I would do that for sure. I can get another one off of ebay, but I would have to buy lifetime map updates again because it is not transferable.

Hi here is the information you need to solve your Garmin problem

If your device is displaying the message Loader Loading during power up, the file that is used to update your device may have become corrupted.

To fix this problem, please follow the steps listed below to remove the update file from your device on a PC:

1. With the nuvi powered off, press and hold the upper left hand corner of the touchscreen with your finger
2. Continue to hold the touchscreen while pressing and releasing the power button on the device. The Garmin Logo should display.
3. Continue to hold the touchscreen while connecting the device to your computer
4. After 30 seconds the screen should flash white. At this point release the touchscreen. A green progress bar should display on the device. After the progress bar completes (45-60 seconds) the device should go into Mass Storage mode with the picture of a computer tower on the display of the device.
5. From your computer click the Start Menu
6. Open 'My Computer'
7. Right click the Garmin nuvi drive that appears in My Computer
8. Left click 'Explore'
9. Input ".system" (without quotations) into the Address bar and press enter.
10. Locate the file "GUPDATE.GCD", Left click to highlight it, and then delete it
11. Safely remove your device from your computer using the Safely Remove Hardware program in your computer's system tray.

To fix this problem, please follow the steps listed below to remove the update file from your device on a Mac:

1. With the nuvi powered off, press and hold the upper left hand corner of the touchscreen with your finger
2. Continue to hold the touchscreen while pressing and releasing the power button on the device. The Garmin Logo should display
3. Continue to hold the touchscreen while connecting the device to your computer
4. After 30 seconds the screen should flash white. At this point release the touchscreen. A green progress bar should display on the device. After the progress bar completes (45-60 seconds) the device should go into Mass Storage mode with the picture of a computer tower on the display of the device
5. Locate the Garmin mounted disc drive on the desktop and double click on it
6. Click the GO menu at the top
7. Click Go to Folder...
8. Type .system
9. Press OK
10. Locate the file "GUPDATE.GCD" and drag it to the trash
11. Empty the trash
12. Safely remove your device from your Mac by ejecting the device

Allow your device to boot up normally. The device at this point should work normally. Please run the WebUpdater program again to update the device's software.

Also please make sure your computer hard drive has enough room for the update, and make sure you connect your usb cable directly to a usb port on your computer and not thru a usb hub.

This should help you solve your problem, please read carefully and take your time. Thanks for using FixYa

The procedure above should still work for your Garmin. The update got corrupted. Did you try the steps above. Can you access the files on your Garmin, if you can remove the file "GUPDATE.GCD"

  • Carl W May 23, 2011

If you can't apply the above instructions to your unit then try a reset,I also included a link to the manual.
Here are the instructions for the reset, be sure to download your data from unit to a computer as the reset deletes all data that you have inputted.

Turn off the unit and then turn it back on. During start up, press and hold the FIND key on the front of the unit. Keep pressing find until the message” Do you really want to erase all user data?” appears. Touch Yes to clear all user data. All original settings are restored. Your resent finds and Favorites are also deleted. These instructions were found on page 42 from the owners manual.

The only other option is to try to open the unit(never tried it) remove the battery,it may reset it. Or the other way is to send it back to garmin and for $99 they will send you a refurbished unit or try to repair yours. You can call them first and they may have something other to try.
US Toll Free: 1-800-800-1020. The link below explains the repair program, pick your unit from the list. Please let me know how you made out, Thanks again for using FixYa

I know it gets frustrating when something is not working but I was just reviewing what you said yesterday, when the unit STOPS and asks "do you want to erase" that's when you hook it up to your computer and remove the file in the above mentioned procedure. The key is that the unit has stopped looping, then hook up the usb to your computer directly and not thru a usb hub.
    Thanks again for using FixYa

  • Carl W May 23, 2011

If you still have the old unit with no sound, try taking it apart and under the battery the memory chip suppose to be there(like a sd card) you could swap the cards.

  • Carl W May 23, 2011

I have a few more thoughts.
I have solved the sound problem by having people purchasing a new power cord/speaker unit , but will the power cord/speaker unit from this current looping unit fit on your old unit with no sound?
Also I don't know how tech/computer savvy you are but if you read through the pages on the link provided below it may work for a ebay unit.:http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/se...

Press and hold the power button when the "loading maps" screen appears. This should give you the message "turn off the device?". You may have to try a couple times to time it just right. Next press the "cancel" button and the unit complets a normal boot without loading any maps.At this point plug the device into the computer and enter USB disk mode. Then delete the bad map file (a corrupted map file could be a possibility). If you have a backup, you could try copying gmapprom.img into the .system folder.
If you can get the unit into USB disk mode, I'd suggest that the FIRST thing you do is backup the entire device before trying anything else.

Or

You can do a hard reset (hold down map and menu) while it is connected to the computer.

Why is map data is not available

It should be available if you downloaded their update software to your computer. I go into it every so often by connecting the gps to the computer thru their software and check for map updates. If the update is large then you will need a larger memory card to handle the updated maps.

Is there free maps that you can download from the internet, or do you have to pay R350 every year to update you garmin.

There are no free maps. You can buy "lifetime map updates" which costs around 85 Euros. When you go to buy the update from the garmin website it gives you the option of a once off update or a lifetime update. If you buy the lifetime update you get to update your satnav 4 times each year for the lifetime of your satnav. Lifetime in this instance means the lifetime of your satnav not your lifetime.

1 Answer

How often should you update or is it more practicle to just purchase a new garmin every couple years?

If you're happy with the satnav you have it's cheaper to update. You have the option of buying a once off map update or a lifetime update. That is for the lifetime of the satnav not your life. With a lifetime update, which costs around 120 euros, you get 4 updates each year. This is the cheapest option. However the only problem with this method is that the maps get bigger each time you update and the space on your satnav stays the same. I started off with a full map of Europe and now I'm only able to store Western Europe on my garmin nuvi 760. You can use memory cards to hold some of the map but older garmin satnavs have a problem recognising the maps on memory cards. If you need the full map you might be better buying a new satnav every few years. If you only use part of the map a lifetime update might be the best option.

If you decide to go for a new satnav I would suggest that you go for one with the biggest storage space possible and then get a lifetime update or get a model that comes with lifetime updates like the 3790LMT. You can judge the storage size by the amount of maps it comes with. The 3790 model has the complete USA + Canada and Mexico or the 2370LT comes with maps of Europe and USA, lifetime traffic updates but not lifetime maps.

I was just given the Garmin 255W as a Christmas gift. Can you purchase the lifetime maps or do you have to pay for each update after the 60 day free update is over.

There are no lifetime maps for your Garmin nuvi. Garmin updates their maps over time, so there are no lifetime maps available for the device. There are free maps and you can buy maps from Garmins website.

Info about Garmin's Lifetime Map subscription option can be found below:

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/maps/numaps-lifetime

Additionally, if unsure about the numaps program, compatible maps, or have questions regarding your GPS, firmware or map sets, choose a method to contact Garmin Support from choices on the page below:

I hope this helps!

Unlock Code

When updating the maps, you need to be registered with Garmin. All the numbers came with the unit. If you turn over your Garmin 2720, there will be a number flanked by "*". That is your unit ID. When you register, you must provide that ID. From the site, you can update your maps and you shouldn't need the 25digit key. It's programmed into your unit.
