Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.

Sounds like the shear bolt is broken, Do you have and owners manual to show you the location of shear bolt? They are easily replaced.

Why do the blades engage when I lift the deck up passed level 4?

Do you push or pull a handle to engage the deck? If so seems when you lift the deck it's pulling back on the deck( the rear hangers & the front) check to make sure if a equipped adjustment holes on the plate on the deck. If you had the deck out from underneath mower. Could be wear places where the clips were. If it's electrical clutch type. Could be a switch, bad or bloken wiring, or wires going to the electrical clutch could be rubbing the frame, hagers, or something else. It could be a twist in the deck belt. All I can think of right off hand. If on hangers set deck down to the lowest setting (don't force it) or intill it stops altogether. Check to see if the connection area. The rod or whatever use and see if the connection area for tightness(bad) should be a little loose. If tight ( make sure the front hasn't rose up) if so disconnect all points. Then make the front connection where lines up with a hole after the front deck to front tires are the same distance has rear part of deck to the.rear tires are the same. Then make the attachments where they land. Try it and lets see what we get and go from there

How do I level the deck on a John Deere X500 mower

FInd and buy a deck level guage (makes it so much easier) photo.25191349-sc2hyhwnmj3wm0xvqhiyjoyo-1-0_0.jpgAdjust the front tire pressures to 14 psi. Set the rear tires to 10 psi. Make sure that the mower is on level ground, concrete driveway or garage floor. Set you deck height knob to 2.5 inches. Move the blades to where the blade tips are pointing to the side of the mower deck. Level the deck side to side by adjusting the lift link nuts,15mm or 17mm wrench. Get the side to side as level and possible and close to a number or mark on the guage. Move the blade tips to the front of the mower deck. Check the front to back and have a 1/8" to 1/4" lower on the front of the blades than the back. 18mm and 19mm wrenches for the front adjusting bracket.

How to level the cut hight of a L130 Jphn Deere Lawn mower

Inflate all tires to the proper air pressure using a high quality gauge such as a digital, not the $3.00 ones but a good quality from say Napa. Make sure the tires are within the same wear of tread and inflated to + - 1/2 PSI of the proper pressure. Find a nice clean and flat surface to park and using a "Tee" square check the left and right rear "corners" of the deck. If you do not own a "Tee" square I've used large wood wedges that taper from 0" to 3" (such as a wedge made from a 2X4), slide the wedge until the tapered part just touches the rear corners of the deck and mark it with a pencil, do the same on the other side and then adjust the rear hangers until the deck is level within 1/8" or less side to side. Then adjust the front hanger to set the front of the deck 1/8" lower than the rear and you are there. From then on simply keep the tires inflated using the example above and your deck should go right back to level again.
If the out of level cut still persists check to ensure the blade tips are even with each other, one blade higher than the other could be a bend blade or a distorted deck and possibly a bad spindle bearing.

Why does my mower deck belt on john deere 316 keeps breaking

There are a few causes for this and its not just this brand or model. First check that belt is installed correctly, check the part that keeps the belt on the belt rollers the belt should be between the garde and belt wheel, check for shine spots where belt is rubbing, Some times the mower deck is not set even or too low it can put the belt at too much of an angel causing the top of roller to cut it. So check the deck level there are adjustment devices on the mower to adjust, check for shine spots and for correct belt installment, and check roller wheel top for cuts or sharp spots, and check belt tension to see if it is to tight or too lose, also check that rollers spin free and there is not one stuck that could be heating the belt up too much, And last but not least make sure you are using the proper belt that is made for a mower fan belts don't last very long on a mower.

I want to repair one of the rear tires. How do I disassemble?

Hard rubber or plastic cap in center to be gently pried off, this will expose a C clip holding the wheel onto a splined shaft. Jack the mower frame up until the tire is off the ground. Remove C clip and then the wheel, being careful keep it, the washers, and the key in order. If you lose the key, which will fall out when you pull the wheel off, axle will not spin the wheel when you put it back together. Note tire can accidentally be put on backwards, so make sure you do not do that or you will rub a groove right through the tire. Mower tires cost more than car tires. Most tire shops can also fix large mower tires.

My deck cuts shoter on the rt,ie uneven

Check your tire pressures:
10 psi. for rear tires.
14 psi. for the front.

Note that according to MTD:
Making sharp right hand turns. Twin-blade mower decks are designed with the discharge on the right side and two side-by-side blades. The side-by-side twin blade decks have the left hand blade positioned slightly forward and in front of the right blade. This provides cutting overlap when traveling in a straight line. As a result, the tractor should mainly operated making primarily left hand turns when cutting. During left turns this cutting overlap is maintained. If turning right when, it is possible to negate this overlap and leave an uncut strip.
