The vertical bar does not appear on print preview. The paper is fitted properly.
The bar appears on the print margin area. It looks like some sort of right border.

Does it show on a print preview? is the paper lined up absolutely snug in the paper feed slot?

Their is a newer driver from the www.hp.com site (click on drivers) then type "laserjet 1020" and you should see a operating system (xp-2000-vista) button to click on
under the xp drivers
I downloaded a newer driver that has the fix for this problem

Is it outside the normal printing area? It seems strange-Could there be something stuck in the machine over there? or an ink blob on the paper roller?

I am getting a 5mm dark bar on the lead edge of a print job

try drum refresh and developer refresh... make sure your firmware is current... if possible reset your print card... physically and software wise... make sure that the guides on your paper trays are a good fit... change the default paper tray for print jobs and see if that helps... if it does... then its the tray... if not then call service...

Make sure the paper aligning slides are tight to the sides of the paper. In the case that they are spring loaded make sure there is not something preventing them from holding the paper properly aligned.
The print head could be 'off-track'...
If the text is properly aligned on the edge of the page, but appears crooked it is related to the print head assembly. If the text is not aligning to the edge of the page then the paper is not feeding straight and the paper aligning slides are at fault.
It is also possible that one of the paper feed rollers are not grasping the paper and it is forcing it to one side as it pulls it in.

MFC-9840 prints vertical stripe ~2" from right edge on all color printouts

Hi,
The first thing i would try to do is clean the corona wire on the drum unit. It might also be a faulty magenta cartridge.
