Question about Janome 1017 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Open Question

Hi, I have a Janome my excel 4023 that I just cleaned all the lint out of the bottom and now it is jammed. I just had a serger that was also jammed so I gave it the gas on the pedal and broke a gear so I know not to do that again. It hasn't been oiled in a long time so I am thinking maybe that is what I need to do but I am not sure where the oil goes it doesn't say in my manual. Do you think oiling it will help or is this a gear problem? I also have been having rust on my machines for having the air conditioning off. Help Thanks Janette

ALL machines will require lubrication at some point. It will require covers to be removed however. Apart from the cover over the needle bar / presser foot area, I dont recommend you try taking them off as without knowledge of exactly how, you can break the retaining clips. Cleaning out the lint REGULARLY is very important - you can use a vacuum with a crevice tool.

So, remove the 'lamp' cover and needle plate, vacuum out thoroughly. Apply a drop in total to the length of the needle bar, a small amount on the presser foot shaft.Remove the black plastic shuttle, clean around it, apply a SMIDGE of oill to the 'track' on the underside of it. Thats about all you will have access to. Use proper sewing machine oil - NOTHING ELSE!

If you sew a lot, get it serviced proffessionally - they will do the areas you can't access.

Good luck!

You need to take a drawing of the plug on the machine and go into any sewing machine shop to match it up

This is a symptom of winding the bobbin to tightly with a stretchy thread (poly or nylon). I would break bobbin to remove it rather than risk damaging machine

I bendt my needles, and after changing them it wont sew. the threads just come out without getting sewn together.. just 4 straight threads..

Once the thread breaks, the serger usually has to be re-threaded - all four components of the serger.

Raise the antenna to it's highest position.

Open the tensions to zero.

Turn the handwheel so the the loopers are at their highest position. Some sergers have a mark on the handwheel that aligns with a mark on the side of the serger for this step.

Thread according the the sequence indicated on the threading guide - this is either on the inside of the door or on the serger.

Is there a way to drop feed dogs on My Excel 4023? I thought there was but I seem to have forgotten how to do this. Please help!

The drop feed lever is located underneath the free arm bed at the back. To raise the feed dogs, push the lever to the right. To drop them push it to the left. Hope this helps!

My Janome Excel 23x will not reverse. Any ideas? Louise

mine had the same problem... If you can take it apart...the part that should slide back and forth inside just needs to be oiled with machine oil.  Slide it back and forth a couple of times after oiling it and it should start to work,

I am looking for the correct settings for my Singer serger.

The easy way to reset an overlocker (serger) is to ensure the tension units are all clean and lint free, then use a different colour for each looper and needle/s.

Sew a sample, check front and back, make a small adjustment as required, another test, and so on until an even result is achieved.

If the tension dials pop off easily you can then put them back on so they are all on the same setting (Janome uses 3 as their base setting).

If the knob or dial is fixed, just write down the new settings and keep with machine........the lint is important, as it can jam in the tension dials and hold them open, thus reducing tension, so make sure they are CLEAN !!

See-saw a length of clean fabric moistened with methylated (denatured or surgical) spirit between the discs to be certain.
