Did you try it on a different battery? These automatic chargers won't charge unless they detect a little bit of voltage and not a direct short. Your battery might be shorted out. Good luck, Al K

I tried to charge my car battery with a Chicago Electric charger model 66783. I followed the directions for charging the battery in the vehicle. After selecting the charge rate of 10 AMPs, the ammeter...

Relax, the charger is working fine. What it is doing is charging the battery to 15.5V. During this time, the "charge complete" LED is off, and the current meter shows the needle going to the right. When 15.5 volts is reached, the current is shut off, the needle goes back to the left, and the LED goes on. When the battery voltage drops to 13 volts, the current goes on again, etc. At the beginning, with a very depleted battery, the needle will be towards the right, then as the battery gets charged close to full capacity, the needle will bounce back and forth because the charger is feeding current in short pulses. Towards the very end of charging, the needle will stay longer and longer at the left end (the LED will be ON), and spend less and less time to the right (LED will be ON for longer periods, and "blink" OFF less and less). Finally, at full charge, the LED will stay ON, the needle won't make excursions to the right, etc.

alternator's go bad - even some new ones are no good - prolly a rebuilt one gone bad - test it -- charge the battery - - then drive it in the day time to the local advance or auto zone - they will test ur charging system - also - take down the vin number and ask the local dealer if there have been any recalls or service bulletins - on ur car -

My 600amp jump pack needle hasn't been charged in a while

Have a look at one like yours in store & see what specs are on plug in to charge. It will say Output voltage ..., then how many amps, or milli-amps, for example: ( output voltage 13.5 VDC @ 800ma.) Now find a charger/adapter, with same specs, and plug. Perhaps one your using is very minimal output, or lower voltage. Be sure polarity symbol is same on both too.

The needle on the needle keeps jumping up and doun and doesnt seem to be charging.

It sounds like a defective alternator regulator, stator, or diode trio. Its probally better to get a rebuilt alternator.

Battert problem

This would typically indicate a charging system or cable connection problem. Take your vehicle to a local Interstate dealer to have the charging system, cables, connections and battery tested. This will help determine what type of problem you are having.
