Kitchen aid (now Whirlpool) has actually produced a defective stove here. Your problem is the thermostat in the rear of the unit. You can replace it yourself if you are handy, but that will not fix the problem that is built in to this very poor quality stove. If you ever try to use the self cleaning feature, it is most likely you will overheat the unit, and knock it out again and again.I wrote to Kitchen aid and received a very rude response from their "customer dis-service dept"...I told them theyir stove was defective and they wanted to sell me a NEW part for a high price, not even saying "sorry"...what a bad company! I urge all to stay away from Whirlpool products...they are junk!

I would recommend that you just don't use the self cleaning function as is very ******* the oven and it's components and brings about costly repairs. Is if fair, no, but it is just the way it is. The manufacuters that sell them don't care. It's money in their pocket. Bottom line is, self clean raises the oven temperature to somewhere in the neighborhood of 900 degrees F and matters not who or where you are, 900 degrees F is darn hot and darn hot can cause a lot of damage.

Our new home has a GE XL44 gas stove the top works fine but when I use the oven it smokes and sets off the smoke alarms. The stove is over 3 years old Any ideas before I have to call the repairman in?

A gas stove shouldn't smoke. Is is clean? There is some grease that has eluded your cleaning efforts of interior surface?

Here are some tips that may help you resolve this problem:

Check the broiler flame. If the broiler flame is not adjusted properly, you could be creating soot from the burner flame.

Position the items that your are broiling lower so that they do not splatter grease up onto the broiler baffle.

Use a broiler pan that will drain grease and drippings down below the top surface.

Broiling many items will naturally produce some smoke. If you have the oven door closed when broiling then the only place that the smoke can go is up and out of the oven vent. If you partially open the oven door, some of the smoke will come out of the door opening.

You may have residue on the top walls of the inner oven cavity. Do you have self-clean feature on your range to clean the oven? Follow all of the procedures in your owner's manual to properly clean the oven using the self-clean cycle. This may clear out any undetected residue that could be causing excessive smoke during broiling.

After using self cleaning feature...oven door locks up...4th time this has happened...kitchenaid says "no known issues with your unit or the problem you reported...can you halp

Hello - we have had this same issue a number of times as well. Do you lose all power on the unit too? We do - have discovered that using the self-cleaning isn't really a good idea with these ovens. The ovens aren't really made to heat to such high heats that are used in the cleaning cycle and during that last hour of cleaning it hits it highest peak - and it blows it's fuses. We recently blew 2 fuses at the same time, locking both doors (Double oven) and knocking out the power for the entire unit. Our repair man said that the average on wall ovens is anywhere between 6 - 12 cleanings before you will blow the same fuses and the whole cycle starts all over again. Our expense was $350. So, self-cleaning now means elbow grease around this house. How this information was a bit helpful for you.

Oven door after self clean cycle won't unlock

Both the oven" ON " light and " Clean " light will flash when the clean has finished . When the " clean " light flashes , slide the latch handle to the left as far as it will go , then turn the " OVEN SET " knob to " OFF " to open the door.

How do I get self clean to work on older fridgidare stove

Move the safety lock/lever at the top of the oven door to the right and press the self clean button on the oven control panel, it is an automatic cycle so it will lock the door from opening and then will proceed with the auto clean cycle. Good luck !

Oven Door is locked and will not open

On many freestanding stoves the lock motor is located in the right rear (looking from the front) with a long rod connected to the lock. Pull or push the rod to move the lock to the open position..
