Question about JVC GR-D31EK Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Lens cap when i try to record with my camcorder it will not record as 'lens cap' keeps coming up on the screen even though the lens cap is not on. why is this and is it worth me trying to repair it or will it be expensive please note i think it is out of warrenity roughly how much to fix or is it worth it who is the jvc agent in ireland or dublin

    When I go to record it says the lens cap is on. The screen remains dark so I cannot record. Please help

Ccd image sensor problem, not to worry though!!

JVC has received reports that in certain circumstances, the following models may, while in the camera mode, show no picture, a distorted picture and/or display “LENS CAP” even though the lens cap is removed. We have identified the probable cause as a failure of the CCD image sensor. Repairs of units exhibiting these problems as a result of a defect in the CCD image sensor will be made free of charge at a JVC Authorised Service Centre even if the unit is outside warranty.
Please call our Consumer Support Department on 0870-330-5000 to obtain your free repair. We apologise for any inconvenience and we appreciate your understanding and support.
Please note that this offer expires on 31st December 2008 and is applicable only to failure of the CCD image sensor.

I own a jvc-d93 digital video camera and when recording the screen is black and the words lens cap appear even though the lens cap is off,can you help.


Please check whether the Camcorder is fully charged. Then, try resetting the Camcorder to the factory settings. Try Power resetting the Camcorder.
To Power reset the Camcorder, remove the battery of the Camcorder press the ON button(if switch, then keep the switch in ON position) for 30 seconds and reinsert the battery in 1 minute. Then, check the operation of the Camcorder.
If the issue still persists, then service will be required. It seems to be an issue with the CCD of the Camcorder.

Lens Cap Error


You have a defective CCD imager - the part of the lens that receives the image. Will need to be replaced.

Hi, this sounds like CCD chip fault.

JVC will repair this for free if your camcorder was sold between 2002 - 2004 as the CCD chips were faulty before they were fitted into the cameras.

If the lcd screen is black even with the lens cap off,the ccd base assy. needs replacing.

sorry i have no exp on cam corders strictly televisions. i would suggest one of the other techs. we have quite a few that specialize in camera and camcorders.

Assuming you don't see any video through the viewfinder, it could be that the CCD has died on that camcorder. It happens, though not frequently.

If the video though the viewfinder is clear, there might be some sensor on the lens ring to indicate a lens cap, or an automatic lens cap not properly disengaging when put in record mode.

Hi Rachaelo,
Had this problem with my camcorder (JVC GR-D31EK), everything else work except could not record...problem is with the ccd imager; needs to be replaced, the JVC agent in Ireland gave me the name of their electronics repair centre and imager was replaced free of charge...repair centre billed JVC.....inherent fault with original ccd imager. Hope this helps...Ed
