It uses oil only to lubricate the chain. The type of oil in not critical although special chain saw oil is available. If you use anything but chain saw blade oil, make sure that it is a light oil, both in viscosity and in colour because it is a total loss system and dark or dirty oil can become very messy. The chain adjustment is on the body at the end of the blade, it actually moves the blade in or out to set the chain tension. The chain should be tensioned that when it is pulled at the bottom, the guides of the chain should not quite come out of the slot in the blade. If the chain is too tight it overheats the blade and stretches the chain.
Amazingly I read the owner's manual online and there is no mention of what type oil to use. However, this is a chain saw, albeit and electric chain saw. Therefore it is reasonable to assume that you would use bar oil which you can purchase anyplace that sells chain saws. Just ask for chainsaw bar oil. If you want to clarify this call 1-800-858-8501.
You need “Bar and Chain Oil”, available at hardware stores and home centers. It is SAE 30 with additives to make it adhere to your bar and chain. An excerpt from a Remington manual follows (edited). FILLING OIL TANK 1. Remove oil cap. 2. Fill oil tank with SAE 30 motor oil if the temperature is between 30 & 75°F. • Colder use SAE 10 oil. • Warmer use SAE 40 oil. 3. Replace oil cap at once. Tighten oil cap firmly for a good seal. This will avoid oil seepage from tank. 4. Wipe off excess oil. • It is normal for oil to seep when saw is not in use. • Empty oil tank after each use to prevent seepage.
