I have an AT&T cordless phone system expandable to 8 handsets. The base model # is E5862BC and all 8 handsets are E580-2. The #1 hanset has seen a lot of use over the years and is malfunctioning. I bought a new handset but the base will not accept the new handset to take over the #1 handset "slot". Is there anything I can do to get this new handset to work in the #1 "slot"?

I have all of the information that I need from the manual. It is the deregistering of the original handset that I need to know how to do but AT&T will not provide any personal tech support for this item because it is out of production -this is why I have sought out the help from FixYa.

Before using a new handset, you must register it with the

base. During registration, you must enter the 15-digit ID

number of the telephone base. To find this number, go to

the base, press MENU, scroll down to select DISPLAY

BASE ID, then press OK.

Follow the instructions provided with your new handset

to register it for use with your telephone.

The handsets provided with your telephone are automatically

registered as Handset 1 and Handset 2. Additional

handsets will be assigned numbers in the order they are
registered (3, 4, etc.) up to a maximum of eight handsets.

If you need you can get the manual on the link below.

You will need to deregister the #1 handset it does not say how in the manual you will need to call AT&T at 1-800-222-3111 (Mon - Fri 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM Pacific Time).

I am having problem with my cordless phone.

Another tip is to remove the battery from the handset for at least 5 seconds. You might want to get a voltage meter and check the voltage on that new battery - maybe it isn't charging properly.

Just bought an additional handset for GE 27951 expandable 6.0 DECT Cordless. I press and hold the Page button for 5 seconds but the new handset will not register. Error keeps occurring "no base."

This exact thing happened to me. Same model number. No matter what I did, the new handsets would not register.

The solution? Reset the entire system:
1. On the BASE - Unplug from wall both power and phone line. Unplug battery from base handset.
2. ON the Extension phone - unplug from wall and unplug battery from handset.
3. Wait AT LEAST 5 minutes.
4. Plug back in BASE power.
5. Plug back in BASE phone line.
6. Plug back in EXTENSION handset battery. Don't plug in BASE handset yet.
7. Follow steps to program EXTENSION. When successful:
8. Plug back in BASE handset battery.
