Your refrigerator compressor is either pumping or it is not. Set the refrigerator to low temperature, pull it out and listen for a while to see it the compressor is coming on. If it is coming on then there may be a freon leak or the internal coils may be iced up. If it is not coming on, then either there is no power to the coompressor, or the compressor itself is defective. Use a voltmeter at the compressor to check for voltage. There is also an add on device to start stuck compressors from your local HIVAC jobber store.

This is more suggestive of either bad compressor or bad compressor relay. Compressor's usually have 5 years warranty.
If you have experience in repairing appliances, could take all precautions necessary and use multimeter - You could do a continuity check on compressor motor and all combination's. An infinity value on multimeter would confirm bad compressor.
On the side of the compressor you will see a box (maybe a cover) remove the cover if it has one and then remove the wire harness. next you will see the relay with the capacitor mounted to it. give the relay a tug and pull it off the side of the compressor. once you have it off pull the capacitor off and then give the relay a shake. If it rattles the relay is bad. if the relay does not rattle the compressor is bad and you will need to call a service guy to replace the compressor.
Other option would be - Go to a local repair shop and get an overload and relay ( cost around $50 ).Replace it. If the problem still persists, then it is faulty compressor.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.

My husband and I bought this same refrigerator around 11/2009 and it doesn't work now either. We too bought this refrigerator at a local target. Yikes. We bought ours for our daughters dorm room and it didn't stay working even one year. Is that how Emerson told you to handle it - by shipping that stupid thing to CA. Thats ridiculous.

Check the back panel on the freezer compartment , is it all icing up or frosting up on the panel. If it is then your defrost cycle is in trouble, and that may be the defrost timer , the defrost elements or the thermodice. I normally change all these items at one go since I'm opening up the compartment and they are not that expensive and I know I'll have a no call back on this defrost cycle situation. Hope this can help.
