Question about Garden

1 Answer

I have a yardman (kawasaki/mtd) 6.5 hp. self propelled mower and it wont start. I cleaned the carb. blew out and cleaned all gas and air lines, changed the spark plug twice and still nothing. All that happens is a short "thud-dud-dud"(like it wants to start), followed by puffs of white smoke out of the muffler and air cleaner box. I also noticed the spark plug keeps getting soaked in oil and I took the muffler off and there was also a puddle of oil in there. Is it trashed? is the timing off or something? I'm outta ideas, any suggestions?

Has it been sitting and not used for a while? If yes, try removing spark plug and pouring WD-40 or similar penetrating solution in to cylinder through spark plug hole and let it sit in there for a while, (overnight if you can) to loosen oil and compression rings. Dump it out as well as crankcase oil next day and add fresh oil. Now try to start, and use WD-40 spray as quick start spray in throat of carburetor to prime it, and see if she'll go. Had a few lawnmowers do the same after sitting , and this actually worked quite well in getting them going again. Once it starts and gets some running on it, the rings will usually loosen up and be ok., at least for another season.

What type of oil do you use for 6.5 hp yardman lawn mower mtd 160cc 21 inch self propelled

The manual will call for 30 weight, but 10w30 works just fine. Be careful to not overfill the crankcase. Your machine will take 16 - 18 oz's when the crankcase is empty.

Yardman 6.5 HP XL 21'' CUT S/N#D06786CN

See if it will start with a little splash of fuel down the carb.

If it starts for a second you probably have a plugged main jet.

The mowers collect a little bit of fuel in the bottom of the carb and then water comes along and it makes rust and gunk and turns the brass stuff all green. You remove the main jet and clean the two holes on the bottom and the little tiny hole at the top of the threads *(you should wire brush the threads and get a tiny piece of wire strand to clean this jet.)

I know you ran the mower till it ran out of gas....but that was only till it ran out of enough gas to fuel the main jet. There was still fuel residue in the fuel line and the bowl.

This should be a fast fix though. Good luck and be careful!

Starts but when chock goes off stops running Honda engine Yardman self propelled mower

OK take and check this. A lot of the honda engines, especially push mowers, tillers and pressure washers, they put a type of coating inside the gas tank. The bad thing about this type of coating is it has a tendency to peal and wash into the carb. I would look inside the tank to see if there is any debris. I would also clamp off the fuel line and take out the bolt that holds the fuel bowl on and catch the fuel that drains out in a clean tray. If it looks dirty, pull the carb and clean it,it should fix it.

Where is the carb on a yardman 6.5 hp?

It will be by the push to prime button, and under the air filter.
