Question about Craftsman 20 Hp 42" Deck Lawn Tractor

Open Question

I have a craftsman 42 inch 917.257661 mower, having transmissions issues. Loss of power and having trouble getting into forward. No problems in reverse. It almost seems to be backwards.......drive belt appears to be on right. This happened after replacing drive belt. Any help would be appreciated.....Thanks Jim

Check to see if all of the belts are in-tact. A belt may have become stressed and out of proportion from sitting for such a long time.

SOURCE: Craftsman 42 inch cutting deck riding lawn mower.

Some of the 42 inch Craftsman mowers Have a cable that goes from the blade leaver to the deck some have a linkage if it has the cable check it to see if it has broken. Find where it connects to the deck pully and pull on the cable wire not the cable cover and see if if comes out also make sure it is connected to the top of the idler pully. If it has a linkage there is a clip that holdes that linkage to the deck it most likely came off.

Lift left hand foot pedal to full extent with top of foot may find that it is not engaging idle pulley, may be time for a new drive belt

What is the size of the belt on a craftsman Lt1000 21 horse Briggs and Stratton 42 inch deck

do not just buy a belt that is "close" to your size belt. the size of the belt is not always a standard size, there is a width as well as a length and also a power rating , that is critical in belt replacement. you must have the model number of the Mower unit "not the engine model" to get the correct belt. OEM belts are made to certain specifications to withstand certain actions of the mower and the wrong size belt could result in a dangerous situation of the blade not stopping or engaging sporadically, or if it is a transmission belt , the mower may not go forward or not stop moving which again is dangerous.

New tractor power loss on a grade, deos not develop full speed

Hello Joe

If you have an automatic or hydrostatic transmission then you have a lemon, which means once the oil heats up in your transmission it thins out and clutchs and swash plate have no grip on the drive system which is hydraulic pressure needed to hold on the shaft and axles this happens all inside the transmission you cant see it but you can tell when going up slight hills and when you have the blades engaged it crawls like a turtle get you warranty out Joe..... dont touch anything that may void your warranty..... just call service department they will send service man out to your home even after that keep a good eye on your tractor since its still under waranty for further problems.

Joe your 20 year old craftsman had a better built ****** by sears and you probably had a 6 speed or five speed even hydostatics were good too, they dont have much problems except belt slipping its an easy fix this new tractor u need service man right away.

I have a 42 inch craftman riding mower when i let out the clutch it stalls and another problem is that it wont turn over unless i jumo it it has a brand new battery and new selinoid

there are several safety switches which are all tied into a central relay which defeats the starting and kills the running, unless they are all in the correct safe running position. a lot of craftsman mowers have that same exact let out the clutch problem and it is related to a failure in one of those parts.once you get that issue resolved, the other issue may resolve itself.

The tractor will not go forward or backward it starts right up but will not engage

1) The drive belt between the engine and transmission has broken or jumped off a pulley.
OR
2) Your hydrostatic transmission is dead.

DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGERS UP INSIDE A RUNNING MOWER TO SEE IF THE DRIVE BELT IS MOVING.

The transmission will not engage,

it is possible that there are no parts missing - reach in and push the "rod end over the rear axle doesn't move the lever" lever forward - the brake is sticking in the "on"position - wiggle the lever back and forth, if it moves more than 1/4 inch, use a half inch wrench to tighten the nut holding the lever until the lever has only about 1/4 inch movement

Hydrostatic Transmission Failure

There is a transmission bypass lever on the back of the mower, if the bypass is moved out of the drive position, it will not drive in either direction, and will be really easy to push.

Craftsman Transmission problem

Some of these tractors have a friction wheel that is driven off of a flat wheel on the bottom of the engine drive shaft. The rubber ring on this friction wheel could be worn out, or it could be out of adjustment.
