Search online for "free disk wipe" software. It will write "zero" data-bytes all over the disk-drive.
Or, remove the disk-drive, and take a sledge-hammer to it. The new owner probably would want to install a newer, bigger, warrantied, disk-drive, before they install an Operating System.

SOURCE: want to totally clean hard

Hi Kiwilass,
When you say totally clean, are you referring to the internal cleaning or the external cleaning?

if its external...hmmmm not advisable
if its internal, then:

for IDE harddisk: Change the jumper settings to slave and slave it on another pc, power ON pc and look for that new drive, right click on it then select FORMAT.( dont do a quick format )

for sate: i think same goes with sata, just that, you dont need to change the jumper settings for it does not have one

How to do clean install of Windows 8.1 when normal clean install does not work. Putting disk in and doing usual F8 command does not work. The computer is in a loop I can't get out of.

Make sure you are putting the disc in a DVDRom and check the bios to make sure the system is set to boot from the DVD. You can also hit the F10 key during start up which on most computers brings up a boot menu. Make sure you select the drive that has the Windows DVD disc.

How to use System Recovery console (steps)

Starting a Recovery

Turn on the computer and immediately begin pressing the F10 key repeatedly until a Recovery Screen appears.
You can also start a recovery from recovery discs, or from Windows. For more information refer to Performing a Full System Recovery in Windows XP .

Recovery is taking too long
If your computer stops responding after using the recovery program, do the following:

NOTE:If the computer appears to have stopped responding after restarting from a recovery, please wait, it may take several hours or longer to complete the initial Windows XP setup process, especially if a recovery was run from a recovery disc set sent by HP. A Standard recovery may also take longer, depending on how many files are stored in user accounts (like in My Documents ).

1 Exit the stalled recovery process by pressing the POWER button on the PC until the power turns off, this takes approximately five seconds.
2 Before recovering, disconnect personal media drives, printers, scanners, cameras, camera-type memory cards, and other devices that did not originally come with the PC.
3 If you are using recovery discs, be aware of the following items:
4 If you created the recovery discs using Recovery CD Creator, be sure to run the recovery from the same drive that you used to create the discs.
5 Clean the discs with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth wetted with distilled water. Wipe from the center of the disc to the outside edge. You may also use disc cleaning kits or disc restoration kits from your local computer store. These kits produce better results than using cloth and water.
6 You may also use available CD/DVD Drive cleaning kits to clean the laser reading lens of the CD or DVD drive.
Try running a full system recovery again from the hard drive by turning the on the computer and pressing the F10 key until a Recovery Screen appears. This performs the recovery from the hard drive.
7 If the recovery stops when recovering from the hard drive, use the section Disc errors occur during the recovery process to eliminate errors on the drive. Try recovering again after the disk errors are removed.

How to erase the hard drive?

You can use a HP recovery disc for your model computer which will return the computer to out of the box condition. You may need to purchase this disc from the HP WEB site.
If you just want to wipe the hard disk clean and sell it without an operating system installed then you can use this program.
Wipe Data off Hard Disk with Darik's Boot and Nuke, (DBAN) Create a Darik's Boot and Nuke on CD disc, then boot up the computer with this disc. http://www.dban.org/download

Bootmgr is missing

If Office Depot "cleaned" your hard disk, then there is nothing remaining on it. You will need to load the recovery media cd/dvd's you created or purchased in the proper order to have them restore the computer back to its initial configuration when you purchased it. Put the first CD/DVD into the drive and then power off the machine & power it back on. The installation should begin. I'm sad OD wiped out your mothers drive.

Have a look on ebay under computers then hard drive erase. There you can get discs for £1.79. I have used a version of these myself and they work very well. Don't know whether you are planning to reinstall OS or not. Hope this helps.

Hard disc file corrupted-how do you repair?

you need a new hard drive. this will void your warranty but you can replace your original hard drive with another one of the same type (IDE / SATA) and all you should have to do is pop in the drive and it will ask to reformat the drive, say yes and let it go. then you can start playing your games again. if that dosn't work then your firmware is corrupt/damaged and you will need a new ps3. just take the hard disk out and use it in your computer or sell it on ebay. other than that, keep the busted ps3 for spare parts in case the 'new' one needs a new bluray drive in the somewhat near future.

Want to totally clean hard drive to sell computer

All hard drive manufacturers have utilities you can download from their web sites that will write all zeros to your hard drive from a bootup environment.

Then if you get a hold of a copy of Hiren's Boot CD, you boot to this from your CD/DVD drive and select Hard Drive utilites and there is a program called wipe disk.

A free program called GDISK, will wipe a drive according to DOD standards. It doesn't com with a boot loader you can use to boot from your CD/DVD drive, you need to use Nero Express to create a bootup disc using the built in boot image from Nero, add GDISK to it and then once you've booted up, you type the command
gdisk /?
And you will subsequently see command line codes to do a disk wipe. Through trial and error you'll get this right unless you are already comfortable with command line structure.

Hiren's is the best tool and invaluable to have around.
You can find the home page for it here.

Worldvet
