Question about Mantis 120 Volt Electric Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand #7250 15 02

1 Answer

My Mantis Electric Tiller 7250-15-02 tines got bound up with roots and grass, and stopped. This has happened many times previously. As always, I removed the debris from the tines, and pushed the reset button to start it. However, this time pushing the reset button didn't do anything. The reset button went in, but the motor wouldn't start. I listened carefully but didn't even hear any humming of a working motor. Nothing.

    Mark,

Thanks. It's not the circuit breaker. I plugged a hair dryer into that extension wire, and the hair dryer works. However, the brushes sounds like a reasonable explanation. I'll get back to you once I check that out.

    Thanks again.

OPTION 1)
Check your circuit breaker on the outlet you are using or plug it into an outlet you know is working (e.g. a lamp works when plugged into the outlet).

sometimes the fuse/circuit breaker pops before the reset button on the appliance.

OPTION 2)
Alternatively, the brushes on the motor may have worn out. These are conductive carbon brushes that connect the wires to the turning shaft of the motor. The carbon brushes are eroded little by little in most cases but when the motor stalls (from roots/debris in your case), the carbon erodes very quickly and the motor stops working. Talk to a motor repair shop or take it apart to see if the brushes are accessible by little plugs that unscrew on the sides of the motor.

Good luck,

-Mark

    Ed,

One more option could be the circuit breaker (reset) button on the Mantis tiller. This is sold as a replacement part from Mantis http://mantis.com/global/assets/owners_m...
part #32 (breaker alone) or #33 (for whole assembly).

If you have an ohm/volt meter, check if you have electric connection through the reset unit on the tiller. Even a small bulb, a battery and some wire can be used to see if the reset unit is allowing current to pass.

Started electric tiller for 1st time this year. It ran a few inches then stopped. Tried reset button, still won't start. Tested cord and it's good. Any suggestions?

Double check to make sure nothing is binding or blocking tines.
Unplug see if you can turn tines by hand ever so slightly. How old is the tiller? warranty? troubleshooting in owner's manual? Customer service may be helpful.

Tines bent

I would call mantis - the tines are covered by a lifetime warranty, and they should send you replacements for just S&H... not a bad price to pay for new tines.

Worm gear has a hard spot, and doesn't turn freely. Tines will run for a short period of time and then stop.

You will probably need to replace the worm gear and any other worn parts in the gearbox. Check your owners manual for part numbers. If extensive repair is needed and your machine is several years old you may be better off with the Mantis trade in program for a new tiller. I found this to be the case with my own tiller last year. Call or go to www.mantis.com.

Just bought an older Mantis 2 cycle tiller. The tines engage when the tiller is started. Of course that makes it hard to start with the tines on the ground! I don't believe it was doing this when I...

if the idle is too high the tines wont stop due to the tiller tines are run by a "centrifuigual clutch" which means when you increase the throttle speed the tines will start to turn : there are 2 adjustments you can try,1) adjust the idle screw under the carburetor where the throttle adjustment and a triangle piece of metal touch(your throttle cable wire will be attached to this triangle) ,if the triangle and idle adjustment don't touch and there's a gap between these 2 pieces close the gap by adjusting the 10mm adjusting nut, this will correctly set the idle #2) adjust the idle adjustment screw talked about above till the tines dont turn with throttle set at idle or lowest speed setting

Tines turning, mantis 2 cycle tiller

sounds like a piston seizure. are you using correct oil and ratio. carb could be going lean and causing the cylinder to over heat, adjust high speed mixing screw and hope no damage has resulted.

I have a mantis tiller, the tines won't turn, the engine IS seated to the flange. any ideas on a fix?

If the motor rpms up without drag it might be a bad gear in the transfer case or a broken cable if it's a cable drive, could also be a bad or stuck clutch. Hope this helps

Hello, I think if you look at the depth setting bar you will find it clogged up with grass and roots. Once it clumps up you can't get it to drop to depth to make the cut. There are two speeds for the rear times for the toller which will make it go forward more slowly and allow the dirt clods to break up better. Also cut the grass as short as you can, make a shallow pass with the tiller 1" to 2 " to cut the heads off the roots and then go to depth with your next cut. This should pretty much break up the cloding when doing the tilling. Also watch it because it is hits a rock it will jump up and drag you away at the speed of the tines, because it lifts the drive wheels off the ground and the times drive the tiller instead. Other than that mine used to chew up everything including wet DG. Good Luck, RAC

Crt or srt tiller?

* CRT or SRT -- These are two terms you will see on rear-tine tillers only. o Counter Rotating Tines are best for heavier duty jobs and for breaking new ground. o Standard Rotating Tines are good for aerating the soil and help propel the tiller forward.
