Your laptop is probably set to power off if there's no activity after 30 minutes. By moving your mouse from time to time you can prevent this happening as the 30 minutes starts counting down again every time you move the mouse.

  • To check if you were successful in registering your satnav go to www.garmin.com
  • Click on the "myGarmin" tab at the top of the screen
  • You should have been asked to create a username and password when registering. Use these to log in. (If you didn't create a username and password you didn't complete the registration process)
  • When you log in click on the "myProducts" tab at the top of the screen and, if your registration was successful, you'll see the name of your satnav, i.e. "nuvi 1410"
If your registration was not successful;
  • Connect your satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com
  • Select your country from the drop-down list
  • Click on the "myGarmin" tab at the top of the screen
  • Click on "Register your garmin product" at the left of the screen
  • Click "Automotive" and follow the prompts

Registration of your nuvi is done online. You go to the garmin nuvi website, then register it from there. To register your nuvi, these are the steps to follow:
  1. Connect your gps device to a computer using your USB cable,
  2. Go to garmin website,
  3. Select 'support' a list will pop out,
  4. Select 'Product registration',
  5. A page will pop up for you to enter a user name and password, that is if you already have an account with garmin, but if you do not, create a new account by clicking on the Create account link.
  6. Then you enter your account information,
  7. Install the garmin communicator plug in2,
  8. It will ask for your products information, enter it and your device will be registered.
After registration, the communicator plug ins will be already installed on your nuvi. That is how you get your garmin nuvi registered.

Garmin nuvi 255w trying to register and update maps. Got the Firefox addon-loaded successfully, restarted firefox; plugged in usb cable to pc and GPS; can not find my device. Tried XP sp3 desktop and vista...

The problem was following the Garmin instructions too closely. What I found via a GPS forum was that some USB cables can be finicky and trying different USB cables may solve the problem. In my case I found I had to turn the nuvi 255W on normally during registration; then connect the USB cable to device and PC. Then the registration and download worked.
The documentation is not clear on this.

Found I had the latest map; but did upgrade my firmware from 5.90 to 6.10.

Tried to reregistering

Hi
Please try the following procedure:

Connect the charger and then plug the power supply unit into the wall socket.
Now insert the two batteries supplied
To register your handset to base station, place it in the main base station with the display facing upward. After approx. one minute, the handset's internal number is Displayed (e.g. 2). Successful registration is signaled by a confirmation tone. Replace the newly registered handset into the charger and leave to charge for Approximately 16 hours. The charging status icon flashes on the handset to indicate that the batteries are being charged.

To register it manually:

Press the MENU options button.
Press the DOWN button until the display shows REGISTER HS.
Press the OK button. Display shows PIN.
Enter your 4-digit Pin (original setting 0000).
Press the OK button. Display flashes REGISTER HS.
Following the user guide for the base station you are registering to place the base into registration mode.

Please do rate the solution as "FixYa" if found useful and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Register/Download Problem

This may be a problem with the Garmin web servers, as I actually had trouble updating the software in mine, saying it coulod not connect to the Garmin Update servers. But that was a week or two ago and I'd have expected that fixed by now. However, it's possible that's a problem too. However, a more probable one, is what I have to say below.
I'm wondering if its more a problem with the computer or cable, since the Garmin should be charging while connected to the PC and if its saying power is disconnected and it shuts down, then maybe it's a problem with the USB port on your computer, or possibly the cable though unlikely. Make sure you're using the official Garmin USB cable the unit came with. Also make sure you are using the right drivers for your USB high-speed ports.
