Question about Sony MDS-JE480 Mini Disc Player

1 Answer

Good evening, I want firstly, when I insert the mini disk inside the deck for the first two songs approximately it plays perfect, later on it starts to kind of stick on the song, then usticks and sticks again later..., I do have it placed over a cd player, and on the right side of the cd player I have a Cyrus 2 and psx. all the unit is placed on a table about 1m from the floor, and have two loudspeakers BW 604 placed at about 45 cm from the units. At first I thought about possible magnetic fields, but the cd 50 marantz never had this problem, and from the beginning the sony md didn't have any problem either. I have tried various mini discs, but things are the same, and something else that I want to mention is that time playing hasn't exceeded the 50 hours. thank you

First let's re-check the symptoms:-
On loading EVERY disk the first two tracks play, but then it starts to fail. Therefore changing disks fails to solve the problem and equally we can be sure your mechanism and reading machinery are operating correctly.

Now try the following.
Open the machine (most SONY players have a single screw at the back then two down each side)
As you view the inside from the front you will see the player mechanism inside the caddy that positions and ejects the disc.

If your machine reveals the whole of the mechanism you should see a horizontally mounted spindle running almost the width of the caddy, lying at a distance that positions it underneath the slide cover of your Minidisc when you have inserted this in the play position.

The disc lens is a 2mm blue hemisphere horizontally mounted to this bar so that the mechanism delicately slides the lens to the left and right under the disc to allow it to scan the disc surface. Look carefully at this part of the mechanism for any amounts of trapped debris especially, hairs, dirt, insects and loses plastic or elastic bands that could interfere with its smooth lateral movement.

The likely explanation is therefore that your mechanism is freely moving to the location of tracks one and two, then gets stuck trying to get to the third and beyond, at which point it jumps then drops out completely.

This simple fix may account for the majority of problems as you describe, however if this mechanism is intact and the problem persists it sounds a good deal more serious in which case, seek professional help or buy another machine.
Good luck and Best Wishes to you all.

Which sony plays hi-md

Hi-MD came after most of the sony decks were made so most of them will not play the discs. The JA50, 20, 333 and other sought after high end decks cannot handle them.

If you check ebay you might find a third party later MD deck which can play them (I believe someone made one).

When the discontinued Hi-MD discs started selling for $30 up each I sold all of mine and the Hi-MD portables too. You can hook up the Hi-MD via rca and just copy them if need be for a special song but this is not pratical due to the vast difference in storage on the discs in most cases.

My disk is stuck and will not eject. TOC still works and songs will play and I would like to retrieve the disk as the content would be costly to replace. can you advise?

Your 520 was a great machine, it is older and many are worn out. It sounds like a loader problem, you can take the top off and access the loader mechanism, if you remove the inside cover you should be able to pull out the disc.
In all likelyhood the recording head is work out or damaged, so be careful with the disc. Most discs will still work if carefully removed, don't get your fingers, dust or hair in the open shutter space on the disc, it is open when inside the machine or you'll mess it up form being read on another machine.
Since you can still play it try doing an analog copy of it by hooking up the audio out to a DAT, CD or other Minidisc unit capable of recording the songs before you start tinkering with the mechanics, so you'll have a backup.
Good Luck!

You gotta remove the cabinet with star screwdriver. Your beam might be tired. First try with the clean up! Unplugg before opening!

Speakers thumping and crackling even when turned off ,varies

im not knowledgable about car audio systems, but i would check to make sure your deck/changer is clean. it takes very little debris getting into your changer/deck to foul cd deck mechanisms. if you dont regularly check the surfaces of your disks for prints/smudges/exc.. you can easily foul the deck by repeated insertion of dirty disks. it could be that an internal motor is weak, a tiny drive belt could be sheared, or a gear inside has broken teeth. the lens that reads the disk information (instances that the disk did load) can be fouled leading to messages on your deck face. both problems you mention , to me, seem to point to fouled internal mechanisms. if you have kids, they can do awful things to your car when you are not around. im a parent and i know lol. the only thing i know to suggest to you to slove these problems is if it is after market deck, you may need to remove it and take it to a repair facility because most cd decks at least the ones ive had arent shade tree mechanic friendly. if the deck is your factory installed, check your car owners manual for information. lastly, if it were me, i would use a multi-meter and check for proper voltage at the wire terminals. good luck!

H02 Error after inserting a dvd disk

The trouble started with an error to close and open the DVD drawer. It indicated "close" when the drawer was open, or "no disc" when the DVD was inside, and I had to try many times before I get the right response and go on with the procedures.
But then it also started playing just a few MP3 tracks and stopping to work, showing again the inserted DVD data. Later H02, and then H07 and STOP. It doesn't even start playing stuffs, movies or MP3 tracks!

Sansa shaker mp3 player

I bought one of these for my son this Christmas and it's been nothing but problems.

It wouldn't play songs in folders. So i deleted the folders and dropped in mp3's and it played fine for a while. Then it just stopped working. Changed the battery and it still wouldn't work. Plugged it into our PC and couldn't access the sandisk at all. Windows would recognize the device but upon clicking on it I was asked to insert a disk into the drive.

Two days later I try again and this time it insists that the drive has not been formatted. So I format the drive, losing all the data that I couldn't access anyway and I was finally able to drag more songs onto the players disk. All of the songs previously on the player were gone of course.

It played fine for a few minutes but then it began to shut off after about 20 seconds of play. I double checked the format on the songs on the player to make sure they were mp3. I tried using different songs - same results. And now it's returned to my original problem. I can't access the sandisk and windows is asking me to insert a disk into the drive.

This very simple to use player is so simple that's it's a defective piece of junk.

Sounds like a fake chip - did it come from Ebay? Try to verify the chip's authenticity, there are some guides on ebay that show what to look for on the packaging and on the chip itself.
