SOURCE: sony str bd-930 connected via digital input to ps3,no sound..

on the ps3 in audio options you have to set it so that the sound is going through the optical and not the hdmi. this it was I think the problem is.

SOURCE: Sony DG510 - Not Getting surround sound out of Cable

Did you try it on BOTH the SAT and Video 2 optical ports? Still not working? Could be the Optical cable is bad.

Does your Cable Box also have a coaxial digital ouput? It looks just like a standard RCA connector but says Digital somewhere near it. Try one conductor of a standard audio cable from it to the "DVD" coax connector. Select DVD to hear it.

If it still doesn't work jump into the Cable Box setup to make sure it's output is set up properly.

I would recommend using the coaxial digital option if you have it.
1) The cable isn't special or expensive like the optical cable is; a garden-variety RCA cable works just fine.
2) You have virtually unlimited distance to work with in the house.
3) You don't have to be so darned careful with it as with optical.

SOURCE: Hi I have a STR-DN1000

Your connections are fine the issue here is with the onboard processor.

HDMI is a great connector ONLY because it simplifies wiring.

The "concept" was to give consumers a simple way to connect their components while allowing devices to "communicate" to each other by being able to send control signals through the same cable.

HDMI is a digital format which has advantages but unfortunately these signals must be processed by the receiver, the problem that arises is that dvd players, video games etc. generally do not encounter issues when connected directly to a television but once you route that signal into the receiver well that a whole new ballgame there. (you are adding processes to the signal)

The delay and popping are caused by the processor making the needed adjustments and "reading' and converting the signal for display.

Personally I use HDMI but I also connect the optical AND component cables, Why? well for starts you can "upconvert" to HDMI but not "downconvert" so if you need a analog signal for a dvd burner s-vhs recorder or ? the HDMI signal can't be converted to a lower quality (for copyright reasons)

If you are not using the receiver for video switching or for multi room you will get a better picture by bypassing its video capabilities.

On low or mid line receivers such as your Sony I would run the hdmi's to your HD monitor and run the optical cable to your receiver.

Yes this will mean you will have to switch 2 inputs when changing sources (tv and then receiver) but should give you quicker video processing and better picture.

Now I don't want you or anyone to think "oh my Sony sucks" as its not entirely Sony's fault HDMI through ANY receiver brings issues I have a $2000 Denon and the HDMI sucks on that too!

I did write an extensive article/post on HDMI processing about a year ago its somewhere on this site.

Hope that helps

Hi,
Protect display indicates that receiver is in protection mode due to some serious problem in output amplifier section and most probably any output channel output chips got shorted out.
Protection mode turns On to avoid any further damage in receiver. If your Sony STR-K840P is under warranty then call numbers written on warranty documents to ask warranty cover and if unit is out of warranty then either Sony service center or local repair shop will help you to get it fixed, it is not user level repair.
Hope these info will help you.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

Surrond noises play but no voices , we can hear the music on the dvd and background noises but not the voices

The voices generally come out of the center channel speaker, in a 5.1 or higher dolby set-up. Hope this helps.

User hears faint static while on a call. It's not load enough to make it hard to hear the caller, but a noticable crackling/static noise can be heard in the background. happens on every call.

Cell phones transmit the sound as digital data. The data when converted back to analog to listen too CAN have "digitizing noise" which will sound like static.

WORSENING the problem is if there is noise in the background of the person sending the voice and the worst possiblle is to have MUSIC in the background. These both drive the CODEC (the analog conversion system) crazy and will create what you describe. The CODEC is designed to transmit ONLY voice.

Background sound too loud

Thank you, everyone! I thought maybe I was losing my mind. I can hardly watch a lot of the TV shows anymore due to the inappropriate use of music -- either it's too loud or there's just too darned much of it. Come on, TV producers! You are supposed to get better with time, not worse! Thank goodness I'm not alone.
