MP3 players use the popular USB connection which sometimes produces errors while connecting. These messages are similar to the "Device Not Recognized" error received with various USB devices. Fixing an MP3 player is sometimes specific to the brand, but they are so similar that most can be fixed the same troubleshooting steps.

Instructions

Device Manager

Click "Start" and go to "Control Panel." Double-click "System" and locate the Hardware tab to find the Device Manager. Vista and Windows 7 users can just type "Device Manager' from the start menu.

Locate "Disk Drives" from the list and double-click "Portable Device." If there is an exclamation mark or other error on the device, go to the "Drivers" tab.

Click "Uninstall" and remove the player. Restart the computer and attach the player reinstall the drivers.

Anti-virus conflicts

Plug the player into a different computer to see if it gets recognized. If it does not, contact the manufacturer to find out if it is broken.

Turn off your anti-virus program on your PC if the device works on other computers. Reinstall the drivers using the device manager as described in section 1.

Plug in the player to confirm the connection.

Other solutions

Check the battery level and make sure the batter is not low or depleted. A low battery will sometimes prevent the player from connecting. Let it charge from the power cord, if necessary.

Verify that you have at least Service Pack 1 installed. Go to the Start menu and type "Run." Press Enter.

Type "Winver" in the box and press "Enter." The Windows version will be displayed along with any installed service packs. Download a service pack from Microsoft, if applicable.

Remove the player from the USB port and push a pin into the reset hole located on the bottom. Reconnect to see if the problem is resolved.

Check the connection to make sure it's secure. The cable should fit firmly into both the player and the computer. Connect to a different USB port if you have one available.

Download updated firmware or use the MP3 Recovery Tool provided under Resources (for Zen players).

Tips & Warnings

A bad cable will sometimes prevent a good connection. Use a different one to isolate the cause.

How can I get my MP4 player detected on my dell computer as currently it is not being recognised when I plug it in.

I'm assuming its being plugged into a USB port? Have you tried plugging it into a different port. If its still not recognized. go to "Device Manager", then to "USB Serial Bus Controllers" and delete all the ones that are listed. It will not allow you to delete some, just ignore those and delete all the rest, Then reboot your computer, wait until its finished re-installing all the controllers, then plug in your player.

Most media players are USB connected. You should be able just to plug it in and drag and drop your songs on to the player

My pc accepts mp4 hardwear momentarily then rejects it

A connection is possibly loose, seems like a hardware problem that would require service. Check the usb connector and its pins.

You have tried it on two other pcs? what was the result there did it work? If it worked on both fine, then the issue is on your computer and not on the mp4 most likely.

Please clarify.

I have just purchased a new crypton brooklyn mp4 player and my computer does not recognise it.... well it sees that something has been plugged in to the USB but tells me that it has malfunctioned

There is problem with USB cable...every single one of them...go to the shop  where that device was purchased or their service center, and get the new USB cable.  Or just find and buy a new one (cable). :)

You'll need to open up your player to find the plate and board ID numbers to be able to find a compatible firmware for your player. Take a look at this post here: http://mympx.org/forum/knowledge-base-faq/41330-how-recover-dead-mp3-mp4-player.html. This will tell you how to recover your dead player using your firmware.

Hope that helps.
