Hi bobhifi, it is spinning OK. It is playing cd's but not DVD's for some reason. These are DVD's that the player used to play all the time. It's like it has forgotten how to read DVD language.

Hi,
"Disc Error" or in some brand also known as "bad disc/no disc error" will be encountered once the processor fail to read the disc loaded to the unit. Here are some steps that may help you regarding the symptoms.

1.Clean the lens. - Sometimes because of dust and any fine foreign objects the lens can't read any disc. If you have a CD/DVD Lens cleaner, play it to the unit. If this is not available you may manually clean the optical lens. Open the cover and gently clean the eye of the lens by smooth, clean, soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this, just a gentle stroke only.
2.Check the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.

Load the disc into the tray and play it to the unit. Observe if the disc try to spin or not, or the disc spin slowly, if so then check the spindle motor.
3.Check the motor - Check the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.

Hint : Most of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.
If the above steps didn't cure the problem, high chance that your optical lens was faulty.

If you can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the symptom.

Also, check if your unit is under warranty period, avail it because the manufacturer will fix it for free. Don't attempt to open the cover(it will void the warranty).

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

There is a simple test you can do to find out if the disc is spinning at all or not.
Eject the tray, place a disc with the title parallel to the front ( the writing should be readable with out bending your neck ). Close the tray and after you you get the disc error notice eject the tray, see how the disc is sitting on the tray. If its exactly as it was when you loaded it means that the disc is not spinning.
Open the top cover after unplugging the power cord . Plug the power cord and eject the lower tray. Unplug the power cord and using a cotton ear bud gently clean the optic lens ( looks like a fish eye ).
The optic lens is under a protective plastic plate to prevent you from directly looking at it and causing retina damage. Look from the side to see the lens.
After cleaning insert a disk and try playing while keeping the top lid open. If it still does not spin and load the disc its time to replace the optical unit. Will cost you about 20$ plus service charges. You will need professional help for that.

Won't load DVD

call support from manufacturer on how to reset your player,

For instance, on Samsung players after it is powered on you hold in both channel buttons for 10 sec and the player restarts. that fixed mine that had the same problem
