I'd suspect a poltergeist or a stray i/r source somewhere in your environment. You can prove the latter by blinding the receiver so it can't 'see' any remotes. Then just wait. If it behaves you have an unintended i/r source that it listens to. Security systems, garage door openers, sunlight...
