Question about Heating & Cooling
That sounds like a safety feature. Better units protect themselves by shutting off if the outside temperature is not warm enough to turn the freon into a gas properly.
Running an A/C in the winter could cause liquid freon and thick oil to go where only gas should be and lock the compressor.
