Question about John Deere Garden

I just changed the battery on my John Deere LT155. I have attached the positive terminal, but as soon as I touch the negative to the post - sparks and then smoking from underneath the air filter. The light comes on so I know it's got power. Not sure what to do.

Hey, sounds like there could be a short under the air filter, remove and check to see if there are any signs or arcing to the frame, if so, repair (electrical tape) affected cable. You should always attach negative lead first, then positive, this will ensure frame and circuits is at same potential of battery. Hope this helps. Matt.

Hi there

geesopetes

are you sure you have fitted that battery in correctly , positive to red heavy battery terminal
and negative to black heavy terminal ( this connects to chassis or earth )

almost sounds like you have transposed the battery or have replaced the battery with a reversed terminal position and have positive going straight to earth and has a dead short

check and let me know

cheers paulyy46

I know what you are talking about - I first purchased a battery that had the terminals on the opposite side of the battery than what I needed. That made me call and make a second trip to Lowes to correct this. That wasn't the problem with this, however. Thanks for your help!

How to jump start a vehicle safely

You have a dead battery and need a jump start. There is the right way and the wrong way to accomplish a jump start safely. Because of the potentially severe hazards due to improper use of jumper cables it must be done correctly. Auto batteries contain Sulphuric Acid which can blind you, or at the very least burn your skin. Also auto batteries vent off Hydrogen Gas which is highly explosive even from the slightest spark. Because of this danger it is critical to attach the jumper cables in a precise sequence. 1. Park the vehicle with the GOOD battery close to the vehicle with the BAD battery but do not let the vehicle touch each other. Make sure the cables are not routed so as to touch any moving parts, such as a fan blade. 2. Attach the jumper cable Positive + terminal to the GOOD battery Positive + terminal. 3. Attach the other end of the jumper cable Positive + terminal to the BAD battery Positive + terminal. 4. Attach the Negative - jumper cable terminal to the GOOD battery Negative - terminal. 5. Attach the last jumper cable Negative - terminal to a heavy metal ground part of the engine and NOT to the dead battery Negative - terminal. Reason being this last connection will cause a spark, and you do not want a spark next to the battery where it could ignite the Hydrogen. 6. If the engine of the donor vehicle with the good battery was not left running, start the engine and let it run for 2-3 minutes to put a charge in the bad battery. 7. Start the vehicle with the BAD battery and then remove the jumper cables from the batteries in the exact opposite order you installed them.

I have a john deere 2010. with a generator it is a pos ground when I got it someone put a alternator on it dose this change the ground to a negative

To be sure you can use a test light, touch one lead from the test light to the frame of the tractor and the other lead to the Positive + terminal of the battery if it lights up it is negative ground if not touch the negative - terminal of the battery and if it lights it is positive ground.
One thing to check if it was converted to negative ground is that the switched the wire on the ignition coil.

john-deere-2010-generator-pos-ground-qumruwi2utlvsp5qakcuppif-5-0.jpg Using your test light you need to turn the key to run position, touch one lead to the negative - terminal of the battery and on the ignition coil touch the Bat + threaded stud it should light and means it correct and do nothing. if not touch the Dist - threaded stud and see if it lights if it does move the wires on the ignition coil to where every wire on the Bat + threaded stud is moved to the dist - and every wire on the Dist - threaded stud is moved to the Bat +.
There is a good chance your charge gauge is backwards also , it swings in the direction the current runs and when it was reversed so did the needle on the gauge and in the case it does not mean it is discharging.

What could cause a spark when I install the positive battery cable on my John Deere 4240?

Sparking between the lead and positive terminal when connecting them is normal. But you should always connect the positive first then the negative.

Can I jump start a john deere 445

Yes, you can jump start it with any 12 volt battery on any vehicle. Just do not have the donor vehicle running. Connect the positive cable from the donor battery to the positive post on the battery on the mower. Then connect the negative cable from the donor battery to the engine block or other ground source on the mower. Do not connect it to the negative post on the battery. Make sure you have a good connection on bare metal for the negative cable. Disconnect the negative cable the instant the mower starts.

John deere lt155 lawn tractor shuts off when it gets hot while mowing, could this be electrical?

I had a similar problem lasy year.
Try this:
As soon as the machine seems to be stalling, loosen the gas cap.
If the engine continues to run, clean the gas cap vent hole(s).

I have a John Deere L110 that won't start. Mowed grass then parked it and it wouldnt start. These are all of the things we have done: New spark plug, solinoid, all 3 safety switches, battery terminals...

problem could be: brake pedal is not depressed; PTO is engaged; battery terminals are corroded; battery not charged; blown fuse; or fusible link in starting circuit is blown. These are the Most Common Causes for your Problem. Recheck your voltage of the battery and then check it under a load....Take a Jumper Cable Set and Attach the Positive Lead to the Positive Post of the Battery. Take the Other End and FIRMLY Touch the Large Post of the Soleniod on the Starter Side. If the Starter Turns the Engine, then Check the Voltage from the Ignition Switch to the Soleniod. If the Voltage is Going From the Switch to the Soleniod When the Ignition Switch is in the Start Position, then Replace the Soleniod. If No Current from the Ignition Switch to the Small Post on the Soleniod, then The Ignition Switch is Bad ....Hope this helps

Need instructions for changing a drive belt on a john deere LT155 lawn tractor. When mowing up hill the forward motion is slipping even though i am not loosing traction. if i come off the pedal and start...

I have googled LT155 and came upon john deere LT155 lawn tractor(noncurrent). It took me to John Deere's site. I put in your model number and it had several catagories. I would try the alphabetical list, go to B and look for traction belt.
Good day.
