I live in Uganda and have just bought a used 1997 Mercedes Benz C200. I would like to carry out a full mechanical service but have no idea what kind of auto gearbox oil and differential oil it uses. A technician tells me it has 'an electronic gearbox'. I'm also not sure whether to use synthetic or semi-synthetic oils for the engine. I'll summarise my problems in the questions below.
What oil should I use for the auto gearbox?
What oil should I use for the differential?
What oil grade should I use for the engine?
How do I know when to change the spark plugs?
Thanks in advance.
Allan
Gearbox -> Synthetic automatic transmission fluid
Differential -> Either 90W engine oil or 85W90 gear lubricant
Engine oil -> Not really sure of the weather in Uganda but I take it it stays pretty warm all year long, probably 20W-40 or 15W-40 synthetic
Spark plugs -> Well there could be a long debate over that... if you're having engine performance/missing problems i'd try replacing them right away but with any gasoline ignition system i try to replace the plugs about once a year... plug wires about 5 years... regardless of condition. In my case, i don't usually go for expensive "platinum" or whatever kind of plug that costs about 10 times as much and usually don't do much of a difference... I'd rather buy reasonably priced spark plugs and replace them regularly, and get a much better result and more money in my pockets... because even if you did buy the expensive ones you usually end up replacing them at about the same time you would have the cheaper ones, with the same effect
