Question about Echo 30.1CC Chainsaw With a 14 In.bar and Chain

1 Answer

How do I remove side cover assembly on an Echo 280E saw to get at starter cord so I can see why it does not recoil? It appears necessary to remove handle first because it passes through a hole in the cover of the recoil spring, and I cannot see how to remove the handle.

How do I replace recoil spring on generator

Depending the manufacture of the engine the actual replacement varies. You basically need to first remove recoil starter cover assembly. In the center in most recoil rope pulleys will be screw(bolt) that need to be removed. Pay close attention the assembly order or the parts; take picture if necessary. Once you things a part and old spring is removed. Be careful even broken springs can go flying and cause injuries. Carefully put the new spring in the correct direction. Re-assemble the rope pulley unit. To put tension on the spring you wind the pulley in the same direction as it would if you was pulling the rope out. Wind until it stops then unwind up to one turn depending where the rope enters the pulley and install the starter rope. After the starter rope is installed slow let the pulley take up rope slack. Then you re-install the starter cover assembly on the engine.

Note on some engine other components needs removing just to the starter cover off. I know of some Briggs engine that this is true as the carburetors has to come off first.

Chainsaw starter rope won't pull

Pull your spark plug to ensure it isn't a compression issue or even piston/rod damage. If it still doesn't move, pull off your starter assembly and try to rotate the fly wheel by hand. If it turns, then your issue is in your recoil spring kit. You can replace the unit, or try to disassemble and reassemble.

Cord rewind assembly

If you place the chain saw on a work bench with the bar and chain pointing at you. We will call the side with the chain and bar the left and the side where you gas and oil the saw the right side. Now on the right side just behind the oil filler cap is the starter rope and assembly . There are four screws that holds this assembly to the saw. Remove these 4 screws while carefully watching and lifting this assembly from the saw. turn the assembly over and if you can see and grab the old starter rope . Grasp it and pull out on the rope a few times so you can see how it works, play with it a bit, so that when you replace the old rope with a new you will be familiar with the action. You can find starter rope at local chain saw or hardware stores, estimate the length you will need. Re-thread the new rope in opposite direction that you saw the old rope function being careful to duplicate the knot at the end of the rope which will be inside the assembly, threaded in as you saw the old one come out. So look carefully. Play with it a bit. Familiarize yourself with how the two holes line up and thread through the spool and the knot is tied. Now make sure the end of the rope coming out of the assembly has the recoil action. Tie on the handle being sure to take only enough re-coil that there is no slack in the rope and handle end. Replace the assembly and check the action. Have fun! Alvin

Fixing a cord recoil on a mtd mower with a 4 hp briggs and stratton engine

The upper covers and the fuel tank needs to come off, the starter on most engines is part of the engine cover so this will have to be un bolted and removed with the starter connected

The pull cord hasn't snapped it just wont recoil! is this an easy fix?

Sounds like the starter spring has broken, remove the three torx screws securing the starter and remove the starter, prise off the r clip holding the pulley and pawl on ( note the orientation of the clip on the pawl ) remove the pulley, the spring is in a cassette, remove the cassette and replace with new, refit the pulley, make sure the pulley locates properly into the hook on the starter spring, re fit the pawl and r clip, enter the cord into the cut a way in the side of the pulley, now wind the pueey around to tention the spring.

Cord is locked, or maybe its the motor. Its an Echo PB260L Backpack

This is easy enough to check. There are 4 screws that secure the recoil starter to the engine. Remove these 4 screws and remove the starter assembly. Pull on the rope and see if the starter is operating properly. If not, go to your local Echo dealer and get a new one...they are about $30. Also try to turn the starter cup by hand to see if the engine is locked up. If the engine is locked up, remove the spark plug and try to turn the starter cup again. If it is still locked up, then the repairs would cost more than a new blower.
Good luck!

Ryobi 40cc chain saw, pull cord won't turn rotar assembly

I had the same problem with my 18 inch Ryobi saw. The problem is the tabs that engage the recoil to the flywheel are of poor quality steel and they bend out of position. The end result is when you pull tyhe rope it just jumps and wont start. Eaven the new parts do the same thing. Simple soultion is remove the recoil starter four screws require a torx bit or a flat screwdriver. after your remove the recoil starter using a pair of pliers bend the two tabs upwards untill they are not quite straight up (about a 80 degree angle be carefull not ot brake the tab off) once you have done this remove the center nut that holds the flywheel on. the silver pins that hold the tabs in position need to be punched out but remember how they go back by doing only one at a time and remember how the spring is installed. Turn the flywheel over and using a punch and hammer remove the pins. Put the tabs in a vise to hold them sucerly clean the steel as best you can on the inside of the bend. Fill the bend with brazing rod or coat hanger if you haven't got any brazing rod avilable. You don't have to com;leatly fill the bend but put enough in there to suport the tabas so they can't bend agin. Reassemble the saw and you're done. Mine works great now, better than new. This problem isn't limited to recon saws only, mine is a new saw and I still had the problem. Good luck herbdogs

Chainsaw won't start

Time to get out your trusty tool kit. Remove the side cover assembly and look at the recoil assembly. You should see a pair of fingers that when you pull the cord move toward the center. If the fingers are there and not broken, make sure they move when you pull the cord. clean them if dirty or have foreign objects (like sawdust) around them. If the fingers are broken, replace them. You should be able to purchase them from your local saw shop.
