First, make sure you're pressing 2nd [MATH] F5 to get to the MATH MISC menu. To see additional items on the menu (in effect, to scroll through it) press the MORE key (just to the left of the left-arrow key), not the arrow keys.

The TI-83 can only convert a decimal to a fraction if the denominator has no more than three digits.

Try . 5 MATH FRAC

Does that give you 1/2?

The MATH menu has two options 1:>Frac, 2:>Dec.

The first entered on the command line after a fraction keeps the result in (reduced) fraction form. On a displayed result, it converts a decimal into a fraction.

The second 2:>DEC converts a fraction into a decimal number.

The latest OS (2.53MP and following) has a better handling for fractions.

Hello,

There is no fraction button. Any division of two integers you do is represented as a decimal number. If you want your fraction to remain a fraction you enter it as follows

**7[ / ] 19 [ MATH][1:ToFrac] [=] displays 7/19**

If you want to convert a decimal number into a proper fraction press**[MATH][1:ToFrac] .**

Exemple 7/19 [ENTER] gives .36842105. If without doing anything else, you press [MATH][1:ToFrac] you recover 7/19.

There are limitations related to the number of decimal digits in the floating point number.

.3684 [MATH][1:ToFrac][=] gives 921/2500 but

.36842 [MATH][1:ToFrac][=] gives .36842 : it is not converted to fraction.

Hope it helps

Hello

If I am guessing correctly, you want to convert a decimal number into a fraction. In the TI86 you do as follows

1. Press [MATH] you get a set of menus. By pressing right arrow you can scroll through the list.

2. Look for submenu [MISC] and press the function key. Under that submenu there is a long list SUM, PROD, etc. Press the right arrow to travel down the list until you find**Frac preceded by a fat arrow.**

To convert a decimal number you enter it, then you travel down the MATH menu until you reach the ToFrac menu. You press the function key under the menu and you get your fraction, reduced to its simplest form.

Hope it helps.
