Question about Seagate (ST903204EXA101RK) 320 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

The USB port on my portable hard drive has fallen into the actual hard drive and I can't plug the USB cord into it. Is there a way to take the case off of it so I can reposition the USB port on the hard drive?

Yes, you could disassemble it.
Note that if you "break" something while trying to do so, you could buy an "empty" external casing, and "transplant" your current disk-drive (which still holds all your files) into the new casing.
Probably about $25 for a new "empty" case.

My USB port broke on my 1T hp SimpleSave external hard drive. I have approx 900 GBs of music and videos and pictures. What is best course of action?

Do you mean the actual port on the portable hard drive? If so, it's quite simple. You should take out the HDD inside the shell, and purchase an enclosure which you place the HDD in, you can continue to use it as an external hard drive after! :)

Portable device tab missing in device manager

What type of portable device? Are you talking about something like an external drive or a usb flash drive or something that you plug into the computer's usb port? If so, maybe the usb port is bad, so try another usb port.

Maybe the portable device is bad, so try using it on another computer and see if it is shown. Most times it will show up under My Computer along with the hard drive. Click Start/My Computer and see if it is shown.

Computer doesnt recognize drive

Try a different usb port on the computer. Maybe the usb port you are using is bad.

Try the portable drive on another computer and see if it is recognized. If not, the portable drive might be defective.

Hello, plugged in my hard drive, error message "USB over current detected" pop up instead :( Any idea?

That is typically a general error seen on many devices.
Normally it means you are plugging in a USB device (your hard drive) and it requires more power than the USB port can put out. Many TV's and DVR's don't like USB powered hard drives, they want hard drives that plug into the wall AC outlet for their power. If your hard drive has a second USB plug, or a AC plug, you will likely have to use them in addition to just plugging the USB cord into the TV.

My hard drive is not visiable in system

Ok try to plug it to the USB port at the back of your CPU usually USB port at the back of the CPU supply sufficient power to the device that was plugged in that port so it functions properly cause a USB device plugged to a USB port w/ low or insufficient power supply in that device may cause the device not to work properly that's the reason why your portable HDD wasn't recognize by your system..

Some of the portable drives need to use two USB ports in order to pull enough power to use it. If it has two USB plugs on the cord, you have to plug both of those into the USB ports. It is also a good idea to use it with the computer plugged in. Not so portable after all. In the drawing below there are two USB connectors. Try plugging them both into a separate USB port.
Some computers put enough power out to one USB port, but others don't. If the problem persists after plugging both , I suggest you return it, and find one that will work with your system. Portable drives draw a lot of power, and it does depend on the Laptop.

My s2 portable is very sensitive, that when i donwloaded data on it, after a while, it will corrupt my data, and when i try this to connect to other pc, it not appear on MY COMPUTER, but when I reconnect...

Hi ajsallin ,

The problem could be resolved in the following ways :-

  1. Loss of data could occur as a result of directly removing your USB external hard drive without actually disabling it from your taskbar's bottom right corner , where you get an icon of devices connected , it's like a plug icon.
  2. You need to right click on the icon, choose the device that you want to remove and then disconnect it , till it says that you can now safely remove your hard drive.
  3. Once you have done this , try connecting your hard drive , to the USB slot of the different PC, than the one from which you copied the data on your hard drive.
  4. If the drive does not show up in my computer , it could be probably because you are using a USB hub or an extension cable to connect the hard disk.
  5. I would recommend you to remove any such cables or USB hubs and try connect the hard drive directly to your USB port via the cable supplied with the hard drive.
Hope this helps.
