Sounds like your short cuts are not linked to the programs.
I would suggest deleting and replacing them one at a time.
1. Right click on one shortcut icon. This produces a drop down window with "Delete" in the list. Click on delete.
2. Left click on START and select ALL PROGRAMS.
3. Right click on the program whose Shortcut you deleted in Step 1.
4. From the drop down list left click on Send To and then on Desktop (Creat Shortcut).
A new, functional shortcut will appear on your desktop.
Try this with one shortcut and see what happens.
(NB This process assumed your mouse is set for a right handed person.)

Tip

Create One-Click Shutdown and Reboot Shortcuts:

First, create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on the desktop, choosing New, and then choosing Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard appears. In the box asking for the location of the shortcut, type shutdown. After you create the shortcut, double-clicking on it will shut down your PC.
But you can do much more with a shutdown shortcut than merely shut down your PC. You can add any combination of several switches to do extra duty, like this:
shutdown -r -t 01 -c "Rebooting your PC" Double-clicking on that shortcut will reboot your PC after a one-second delay and display the message "Rebooting your PC." The shutdown command includes a variety of switches you can use to customize it. Table 1-3 lists all of them and describes their use.
I use this technique to create two shutdown shortcuts on my desktop—one for turning off my PC, and one for rebooting. Here are the ones I use:
shutdown -s -t 03 -c "Bye Bye m8!" shutdown -r -t 03 -c "Ill be back m8 ;)!"
Switch What it does
-s Shuts down the PC.
-l Logs off the current user.
-t nn Indicates the duration of delay, in seconds, before performing the action.
-c "messagetext" Displays a message in the System Shutdown window. A maximum of 127 characters can be used. The message must be enclosed in quotation marks.
-f Forces any running applications to shut down.
-r Reboots the PC.

Re HP wireless Elite keyboard (RK713A): I am using it with a Sony notebook (Windows 7) - can the F9-F11 keys somehow remapped to something useful eg. open Outlook etc. ? (Registry?) Thanks!

Here's the Microsoft way - note that all Win7 keyboard shortcuts begin with CTRL-ALT-(your shortcut key here).

Note also that a desktop shortcut must already exist to which to be invoked by the keyboard shortcut.....

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Create-keyboard-shortcuts-to-open-programs

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The way the Internet community does it:
www.autohotkey.com - freeware - allows you to "package" a number of
keystrokes into a "keyboard macro" and invoke that macro thru
the use of a "hotkey." Keyboard macros can be as short as one
function key, but some Win7 function keys cannot be ove-written, such as F5

I have a laptop that will load up but with no desktop icons

that means that the original file or the path of the shortcut does not exist. note down the type of shortcuts you are facing problems with. if it is regarding My computer, My documents, etc. delete the shortcut files. right click on the desktop then go to properties.Click on Desktop tab then click on customize desktop button at the bottom left. under desktop icons, click on all the boxes to activate the icons to appear on your desktop.
cheerz.

It takes too long to start up

Try deleting your temp files to clear up space as well as run hard drive defragment and disk clean up. This helps most time. If you find that your systems is still running slow, you may need to add more memory to process the data you have on your hard drive.

I can,t connect to internet thru my orange shortcut only thru mozilla firefox

At least that proves all is good with the actual connection to the ISP. Have you got two icons on the desktop? Is your 'orange shortcut' the mozilla shortcut or is it for another browser..? Like IE? If the orange shortcut is for another browser or whatever.. highlight it with a left mouse click & right mouse select it & go to 'properties'. It should show (under shortcut) something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"
This points to the actual executable that really runs the program. You could go down the directory structure & attempt to start the program directly from that executable. If it "points" to the wrong executable, then you need to modify the shortcut. You need to compare the two internet browser shortcuts & try to discover whats wrong. Both shortcuts should point to their respective exe files, to start the actual program.

I realise this is probably sounding complicated, so if you are not sure, then post any other questions here.. But as above, you do have access to the internet, so this is not a serious problem to solve. Let me know how you get on.. Rgds,

Desktop icons does not appear

Have you checked the Documents and Settings folder? Basically, Desktop Icons are just shortcuts/links to actual programs.

Since you know which programs had shortcuts to the desktop, use the My Computer in the Start Menu to go to the Program Files and Windows directories to go to the actual program. Then "Right-Mouse Click" these programs, choose "Send to" -> "Desktop". A shortcut will be created on the desktop.

For the standard Windows Icons, use the right mouse click, select Properties, Go to Desktop, click Advanced then select My Computer, etc....
