Question about Leviton Decora Rocker 4-Way AC Residential Quiet Switch, White, #5604-2W

1 Answer

I'm trying to replace Lviton OH3504 Photelectric switch with wires coming out of device for connection. I'm replacing with a Leviton 4 way swith 5604 with no wiring just screws. I'm using the replaced light just to turn on and off. How do I connect the color coded wires.

Are there other locations to switch the same light ? I am wondering why you are using a 4 way switch. Also need to know the color and quantity of wires in j-box and the wires on the old switch.

Need more information.
Project is not clearly defined.
Add a comment with clear description of each wire and what Load is being controlled.
Why are you using a 4-way switch? Are you controlling 240Volt circuit?

Photoelectric switch usually has red, black, white wires, and usually replaces a single pole switch but can also be used to control 240Volt circuit in some wiring diagrams.

4-way switch has 4 screw terminals and is generally not used to replace a single-pole photoelectric eye, but can be used to control 240Volt circuit in some wiring diagrams, so I'm not sure what you are doing.

with a three way switch like this, you will have two traveller wires and a common wire. Look in the instructions for the switch or on the back of the device itself to see if there is a wire labeled "common" or "com". This common wire from the old switch hooks up to the common wire on the new switch. I did a bit of searching on the leviton 6602, but couldn't find anything specifically about the three way version (I would venture to guess, however, that the red wire on the old switch is the common). The common on one of the three way switches will always be a constant hot (or power) wire...the common on the other three way switch will be the "switch leg" or the wire that connects directly to the light. The two travellers go to the other two wires. Check the pamplet that came with the lutron device, it should show which wire is common and which are travellers.

Several questions here.

1) Lights should not flicker and switch should not make sound (or get unusually warm)
2) You should not have to 'press hard' to get switch to turn off.
3) Are the switches defective. YES. Remove and replace with ordinary toggle switch and see if flickering and sound-making continue. If problems continue, maybe local electrician should assess problem on-site.
4) Press to Release. You are speaking about wires connected on back of switch using 'quick-connects.'
Wire is pushed into a hole where wire is wedged against brass spring and held tight.
To release wire there is usually a hole or slot next to wire. Push small screwdriver into opening. Usually you have to push screwdriver very hard using one hand while other hand holds switch. Then use your additional hand to pull out wire. Or you can clip wire off and then strip back insulation and start fresh on new switch.
5) Builder electricians sometimes buy super cheap brand knock-offs that are not UL rated. Do not think all Leviton products lack quality. Buy new switches at local home center, and new switches will work fine.
6) When replacing switches, pay attention to screw-color that sits next to quick connect. Take a photo before removing all wires.
Screw colors tell electrician how to wire a device, and you can post new question at fixya, or add a comment for specific help.

How do I hook up a Leviton Decora no 5601... I have a white, a red, and a black wire

Wiring is unclear without more information.

Question posted under 4-way switch.
Wiring sounds like 3-way switch is possible.
And Leviton 5601 is single pole switch.

Add a comment and say what load the switch controls. Load means light, fan, motor, etc.
Say if another switch controls same load.
And include what type of device you are replacing.
Include what screws and screw colors are on old device.

When you add a comment, it sends email, and I will respond to comment.

In addition to the black, red, green, and yellow/red wires on the switch, there should also be a white wire or terminal marked WH. The black wire on the switch connects to the incoming black wire (line in or hot) inside the switch box. The red wire on the switch connects to the outgoing black wire (to the load) inside the switch box. The green connects to the bare wires inside the switch box. The yellow/red is not used in a single pole application such as yours. The two white wires inside the switch box are twisted together and _also_ connected to the WH terminal (or white wire) on the switch.

Your screw terminals are 2-brass and 1-dark.
Dark screw is considered 'common'
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html#3-way

Leviton shows a 3-way 1203-2, but not 1201
Wiring diagram indicates that pilot light is ON whenever switch has power.
http://www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?item=2681§ion=10046&minisite=10026

Check your instruction sheet that pilot light is supposed to turn on-off with Load.
I don't think it is, without additional terminal on switch for neutral wire.
And then it would only work on switch located closest to light.

You can wire this type of thing separately.
Buy ordinary pilot light or indicator light from WW Grainger.
Look at diagram on following image:

Here is the wiring diagram.
It looks like you connect the black & red wires on the sides as you state.
The black coming from one 3-way connects to the top terminal on one side, the red coming from the same 3-way connects to the bottom terminal on the same side.
The black going to the other 3-way connects to the top terminal on the other side and the red going to the other 3-way connects to the bottom remaining terminal.

I have the unit wired and it does not wotk.I have black to black, red to red green to ground and white to white, any thoughts? Thank you

Electrician test wiring before connecting anything.
First of all, you don't mention what type of switch was replaced.

1) Leviton 6230 countdown timer is made to replace single-pole light switch only.
Single pole is where 1 switch controls the Load (light fan motor)

Your wiring sounds like 3-way switch.
3-way is where 2 switches control same Load.
For example a hallway usually has 3-way switches.

To confirm. If old switch has 1 dark screw, 2 brass screws, and 1 green screw, then that is 3-way switch. Use Leviton LTB15, LTB30, LTB60, LTB02, LTB12 countdown timer for 3-way.
Smarthome sells product and shows .pdf manual
http://www.smarthome.com/4255/Leviton-LTB60-1LZ-4-Button-10-20-30-60-Minute-Countdown-Timer-Switch/p.aspx

2) If old switch has 2 brass screws and 1 green screw then that is single-pole switch.

3) If you are replacing single-pole switch, here are testing & wiring instructions for Leviton timer.
Remove device and separate wires for testing.
Use ordinary two wire tester.
Tape tester leads to wood sticks so hands are away from power.
Do not untwist wires that were twisted together before you started.
Turn on power.
Test each wire to bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on Hot wire. This wire will connect to timer black wire.
Now you know Hot wire.
Test Hot wire to each of the other wires, excluding bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on neutral. Timer white wire connects to Neutral wire.
If box does not contain Neutral wire, then timer white wire connects to bare ground.

Timer green wire connects to bare ground wire.
Timer red wire connects to wire going to Load.

Leviton 8299 combination switch and receptacle with GFCI manual
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Leviton-8299-instruction-manual.pdf

You don't say what kind of device you are replacing.
Instructions below may be way off base if you are trying to replace a 3-way switch.
Instructions below are for replacing a switch-plug combo.
Add a comment any time, and clarify your device your are replacing.

Electricians don't guess, they test.
First thing we need to test is Hot and Neutral wires.

Note where each wire was connected to old device before removal.
Note the wire that was connected to brass, dark, and silver screws.
The screw color is coded, and will verify testing.

Separate wires and turn on power.
Test each wire to bare ground wire.
Tester will light up on Hot wire. Mark the hot wire.
Test Hot wire to each other wire (except bare ground wire)
Tester will light up on Neutral wire. Mark the Neutral.
The other two wires are presumed to go to Load (light, fan, motor)

Now lets look at back of the 8299 device.
On back of device directly behind receptacle part of device is the word LINE.
Hot wire connects to brass colored LINE screw.
Neutral wire connects to silver colored LINE screw.
These two wires will power the device, and power the receptacle.

Next we want to wire the switch.
Notice on drawing below, that switch Loads (light fan motor) are connected to two wires on back of 8299.
Again referring to back of device as reference point, black wire going to Load connects to wire on left side. White wire going to Load connects to wire on right side.
Now turn on power and test that switch and receptacle both operate as expected.
If operation is not correct, then add a comment and say what the second black and white wires connect to.

I am trying to replace a two wire light switch(both white) with a leviton photoelectric 3 wire motion activated light control(red, black and green). I am trying to determine which wire goes to which?

one of the white wires has power on it constantly....that wire connects to the black wire of the leviton.......the other white wire which has no power to it is going to whatever needs power so that wire connects to the red wire of the leviton....the green wire connects to the metal box where your mounting the leviton.
