Generally the spark plugs for mowers come pre-gapped. I use to measure but they were spot on, so now I just do eyeball comparison from the old to the new one, just to check.

Briggs & Stratton Part Number 799876 replaces Champion plug RJ2YLE. For use in Quantum Series 625, 675, and 725 engines built after Date Code 110701xx. The gap for this spark plug should be set to .020". This spark plug should not be used with Quantum Series 625, 675, and 725 engines built before Date Code 110701xx, or any other L-head engine family.

I have found OEM part number 746-0552 on Ebay. This is for older units, say 1997 on. The cable is 49" in length. Here is a link to ALL the MTD brake cables on Ebay.

Yours is the MTD-White Outdoor Push Mower Brake Cable. # 746-0552.
We call this the deadman/brake cable. It allows a small brake pad to rub against the flywheel on the top of the engine while at the same time actuating a switch which shorts out the ignition current to the spark plug. An interesting and much needed device, right! Good luck. Hope this helps.

I have an 01 windstar, when i try to go up hill it kinda jumps, like it is not getting the proper gas, and when it is raining it is worse, the rpm's drop and i have to really give it gas to kick in, any...

Going up a hill huh? I've experienced this on numerous test drives. I most always come back to the gap being too large on the spark plugs. Under load, its even harder for the spark to jump the gap. When the gap becomes too large on a spark plug, its due to wear and should replace plugs. I'd start there. The word you used to describe this, "jumps" sounds electrical to me. I know sounds pretty far fetched. :-) but electrical, ie ignitions faults will cause a sharp drop or increase in rpm, it can even seem as if it shakes. Whereas fuel starvation is more like a bogging, Its not a 100% complete drop off like electrical ignition issues can cause. I think the rain thing is coincidental. I can't think of anything regarding engine performance that rain will affect. I'd start with your spark plugs.

Need do know the spark plugs gap

If you're replacing the spark plugs in your car engine, you'll need to set the gap before reseating the spark plug. The gap is the distance electricity arcs between the ground electrode and center electrode. The gap must be set correctly to ensure maximum performance. Here's how to set the gap of a spark plug.

  1. Remove the spark plug wires. Use a socket wrench to remove the spark plugs from their chambers.
  2. Clean the spark plug if you are not replacing it with a new one. Remove all dirt and debris from the spark plug.
  3. Check the owner's manual for your car (or any appliance with spark plugs) to find out the recommended gap setting.
  4. Use a gap tool to check the gap of the spark plug. Slip the tool between the ground electrode and center electrode. The gap tool should fit snugly at the recommended gap width indicated on the tool.
  5. Push the tool between the electrodes a few times to ensure proper gap. If the gap is too wide, push the ground electrode firmly against a flat surface to narrow the gap and then check again with the gap tool.
  6. Repeat Step 5 as necessary until you reach the correct gap. Reseat the spark plug and reattach the spark plug wires
Good Luck

You need to take the mower into a SEARS authorized store and have them show you the code meanings. Craftsman has changed a lot of their codes so for the first time this is the only way.

Spark plug gap

hi kathy. this is an easy one. first of all you will need a spark plug gapping tool, about a dollar at any auto parts store. Your chain saw most likely calls for PLUG TYPE: Champion CJ6 SPARK PLUG GAP: 0.025 in. (0.63 mm).

Here is the website of a short video to show you exactly how to gap the spark plug. write back if you need any more info.
