first of all the noise is the internal compressor motor hitting the steel shell on shut down. in my experience this is annoying and not really a huge concern as far as the compressor dying any time soon. now your drain problem. i would recomend the wire or heat probe that whirlpool recomends. when your freezer defrosts the water that drips off of the coil can and will flash freeze in the drain area causing it to freeze up a peice of 10 or 12 guage solid copper wire run into the drain and wrapped around your def heater will transfer enough heat into the drain hole to prevent it from freezing up.
fwiw: whirlpool in my opinion is probably one of the best appliances on the market..

The compressor is locked up. Basically it is stuck. You can pick up at the local appliance parts store a hard start relay, Home Depot ,Lowes, or or those guys wont have it. Its not too expensive and is worth trying because your only other option is you need to replace the compressor. The part is called a kick start or hard start, the guy at the parts store will know what you are talking about. It is simple to connect and has the wiring directions on it. Sometimes this is all it takes. I have been able to get a stuck compressor to go by placing a short 2x4 on it and whack it with a hammer a few times. This is only a temporary fix though, as it will eventually lock up again, but emergency situation this saved the food. If the fridge has a fan back there make sure it works too, it may have been the original cause. Good luck.

th ebi-metal is a thermostat which shuts the defrost heater on/off, but doesnt actually put the unit into defrost. if it were bad the defrost heater would never go on resulting in massive build up of ice on back wall of freezer, and noticable refrigeration sect. cooling.. dont know how you know the compressor never shuts down, but if that the case perhaps you have a sealed system/ freon issue. try removing the back panel of freezer section and check the evaporator coil. you shuld have an even frost pattern over the entire evap coil. if theres just frost over the top 1or 2 coils, and the rest of coil is shiny aluminum , thats an indication of a sealed system issue.( 5 year part warr by manufacture) def not a do it yourself issue...but that would,, depending on extent of restriction/loss of freon,, cause freezer to freeze and defrost eratically, and the compressor would be running constantly trying to achieve a good stable temp

i found the defrost timer for my Kenmore 596.62239200 / freezer on bottom. it was in the top of the refrigerator compartment behind the light bulb console. had to remove the light bulb cover and then there are two visible screws that hold the defrost timer to the light console. the timer is up on top of the console and is not easily seen. ordered parts on www.repairclinic.com.

SOURCE: Defrost timer
The above URL will take you to an exploded view of the controls. Look at number 23 which will be located behind toe plate below door on the left side. That is the defrost timer. Rotate the clutch head screw Clockwise SLOWLY until you hear a loud click. That is the defrost timer starting the defrost. If the unit restarts after 18-22 minutes and defrost does not take place you problem is most likely the defrost thermostat.
