Your compressor has a direct short there is nothing that can be done just replace dehumidifier. If you replace compressor it will exceed cost of new unit. If this helps you please rate me and do a testimonial.

Edison 40 fan starts -then trips breaker (before compressor kicks on)...toast?

Maybe..but what else do you have on the same circuit? Could be overloaded by another appliance. Make sure you unplug all items on the same circuit, then try it again. If it still blows most likely its in the unit, if if runs with no problem, issue is overloaded circui, too many other things on the smae line.

Compressor keeps turning on and off, I can hear it and it dims the lights showing an increase in power draw, it will blow the main circuit breaker to the house. Therefore it does not run enough to remove...

If when it's running it dims the lights in the room or entire house, The circuit breaker for the receptacle it's plugged into, is not a high enough amperage to carry the dehumidifier and whatever other electrical appliances that are on the same circuit. OR if your house is hold enough (1970's era), it may have aluminum wiring and its overheating .

If it's blowing the Main Circuit Breaker for the entire house and not just the circuit breaker for the receptacle it's plugged into, Stop using the dehumidifier immediately!!! Have an certified electrician check your home's circuit breaker panel and wiring. This could be a dangerous situation.

Dehumidifier is tripping circuit breaker.

When compresser comes on blows electric breaker

the outlet that you have the dehudifier plugged into has too many items plugged in on the same circuit and when the compressors kicks in it draws more amperage than the breaker load can hold thus popping the breaker either remove some electrical apliances from that circuit load or plug in elsewhere

Knocks out house curcuit breaker and stopes running. Use to work fine and did for at least two years now kicks out breaker after running for a while. Have moved it to different circuits and still does it....

You will need to put an amp meter on the compressor wires and monitor the reading till it trips the breaker. If the reading exceeds the name plate spec then chances are the compressor is going bad.If the spec is in watts, take your amp reading and multiply it by 120 volts this will give you the wattage of the compressor. For a second opinion take it to repairshop to see if it is worth repairing.
Good Luck!

FROZE UP NOW IT IS DEAD

UNplug it and let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes and the built in circuit breaker will reset. The probable cause is the compressor can not start up due to the pressure in the lines so the breaker kicked in to prevent damage

Lifeguard, there are generally no user accessible safety items in dehumidifiers. You are likely describing the start relay which is used to 'boost' the compressor on starting. Jumping it will not help you. It sounds like the compressor is defective. Economically, there is no justification for servicing these units unless they require refrigerant gas or if the fan motor has seized, something you can readily determine. If you don't hear the compressor hum when it should, there is no service procedure available for these sealed units.
