-Some laptops do have a wireless switch. Make sure it is enabled.
-Make sure you laptop is getting a strong signal.
-Check physical connection. Make sure the Ethernet cord is securely connected.
Both wired and wireless:
-Check IP address if its valid, if its valid it means the laptop is connected on the network.
-Check the lights on your modem to check if the modem is getting Internet or if its online.
-If you have a Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you can go to "Network and Sharing Center" check if where the red "X" mark. By checking it you can tell whether the problem if between your Internet provider to your modem or its the network.
