SOURCE: hotpoint fridge model CSx20KATA AD defrost timer

Hi, This model does not have a defrost timer. It actually has a motherboard. If you have a defrost problem, the nore common part to check first is the defrost heater or termination switch ( bi-metal). These two parts are located inside the freezer compartment behind the rear panel where the frost is building up.
These two parts must have continuity. If one or noth of them have no continuity, they need replaced. Please use a hair dryer (NOT a sharp object the remove the frost from the evaporator coils.
If you need any more help or need to order the part, I can help you and we can order the parts off my web site WWW.Whirlpoolpartssurplus.com
Let me know if I can help.

Thanks
Vic

SOURCE: I want to replace a

Good day,
You can go from an adaptive (electronic) to a conventional timer, but not the other way.
I've done many.
The reason why, is initial cost and long term dependability. My experience is, electronics have no business in a device where dependability is it's most important virtue. As well, you would unlikely ever hope to recover the initial cost, even if it was possible.

You can ask for additional opinions, but I strongly recommend you look in other areas outside of 24/7 appliances to find savings.
If you scroll around this site, I think you'll find that electronics are at best a net zero gain, if in fact a negative for the consumer.

Hotpoint side by side, freezer cold and frosty. Frig side not cold??

Signs of a defrost problem. Inside the fresh food section and behind the light cover you should see a small opening that leads to the defrost timer. Turn timer clockwise slowly until compressor and fans stop running. Leave everything in this position with fan and compressor not running for up to 30 minutes. Defrost should be taking place during this time inside and behind freezer rear wall.

Listen for signs of crackling or hissing coming from freezer. If after 30 minutes the defrost timer does not restart compressor and fans on its own then again slowly turn timer clockwise until they do start. My Hotpoint CSX203A side by side refrigerator is warm on refrigerator side, but freezer side is fine.

Let's begin by looking for the defrost timer in photo here=> CSX20BABCWH Fresh Food Section Controls The part number is=> WR9X489 Sounds like you are not getting defrost and this is the most likely reason. Turn the defrost timer clockwise slowly until compressor and fans stop. Allow to remain like this up to 30 minutes and open freezer door and then listen for sizzling or crackle noise. This will indicate the fridge is in defrost. If the timer does not restart the compressor after this time simply turn again slowly clockwise until it starts. If this works the timer needs replaced. You have two other parts the defrost heater and defrost thermostat to check if the above does not work. Then click here=> .CSX20BABCWH Freezer Section Components See the part location 230 is your=> WR51X442 Glass Tube Heater Then finally the defrost thermostat is part location 240 and part number=> WR50X122 Defrost Thermostat
Try the timer first and let me know how that comes out and I will go through replacing the defrost Heater and defrost thermostat once I know how the fist test works. If helpful please rat if not then please tell me what I can answer from here, Thank You Sea Breeze

Hotpoint CSH24GTRA side by side stopped cooling. Discovered coils uniformly frosted over. I used a blow dryer to defrost. Can you please assist me in troubleshooting this problem?

Hello, and great job on defrosting your coils. The defrost issue comes from an issue with one of three parts the defrost thermostat, the defrost heater, and the defrost timer or in some units the adaptive control board. click this link http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/frame_diagram.aspx?diagram_id=20180925&pkw_=basket&model_id=203411&NewWindow=1
Continuity tests can be performed on the defrost thermostat which is I find the most widely faulty part in the refrigerator and is seen in the diagram as part 240 , Defrost heater is shown as part 230 in the diagram as well. Your defrost timer is located in the ceiling of the refrigerator and is shown on this diagram http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/frame_diagram.aspx?diagram_id=20180926&pkw_=basket&model_id=203411&NewWindow=1 as part 257. Usually the issue is about 85 percent of the time due to the defrost thermostat but if both the thermostat and heater test to having continuity message me back and I will instruct on how to test the timer. If you have any further questions message me back Thanks Rick

The fridge is freezing all food contents even when on factory setting 6. How do I resolve this?

It's common problem. You have to check Defrost timer, thermostat and defrost heater. Any one malfunction, you will get over frosting. How to check?
First, locate the defrost timer which may hidden behindcorners of the fridge at the back bottom, in some models located in the ceilingof the fresh food section or behind the cold control cover. Once you locate thedefrost timer, slowly turn the screw in the middle of the defrost timer withstraight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. Now it's in defrost. If thedefrost heater(s) starts, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. Ifthe heater(s) does not start, unplug wire cord to check ohm test for continuityof heater. If continuity is there, plug cord wire which gives power 120volts(check specification) to heater. If heater no starts, bypass defrost thermostatby join the 2 wires in the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on,replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, replace it. Thanks and hope helpful.

Frost is forming in the freezer Hotpoint ctx21ga

I am looking up your model now, it is for sure in the defrost circuit that is causing this. Yes, from what I can find your model has a defrost timer. But have not located where it is, most times 2 places, behind kick plate near floor or inside fresh food cabinet inside the panel where the temperature control is located. When you locate it slowly turn clockwise until refrigerator stops running. At this point it should be in defrost. If timer does not work it will need replaced. I'm still doing some searches on your model so please understand this is not a solid yes, that this is your problem, but we will find it. Let me know what you find, Thanks, Sea Breeze

If defrost timer is clockworks type, manually force timer into run mode using flat blade screwdriver. If forcing works, replace defrost timer ($25.00 approx).
