I replaced the starter on myYTH1848XP mower. When I go start the engine, the fly wheel starts to spin 1/4 revolution and then the starter begins to smoke. The motor will not turn over.

A common problem with mowers is the aluminum key in the keyway between the flywheel and engine shaft it mounts on. If you hit something with the mower blade this key breaks or becomes deformed causing the timing to be off so the engine will die and not start until the key is replaced. This is to prevent the cam and valves in the engine from being damaged. If you are sure of the electrical is good, check the flywheel key.Other possibility for starter smoking is starter ground wires not connected properly or any wire is connected wrong, and this is causing the problem. Poor ground connection Find all ground connections, disconnect and clean the connections. The solenoid, installed, may also be grounded to the frame. Remove the solenoid and clean the area where it bolts to the frame. Clean the connections for the negative battery cable both at the battery and the frame.

To provide a good electrical connection, abrade the connection surface with a wire brush, sandpaper, or steel wool to remove any surface contaminant. Clean the surface with a solvent such as, alcohol, MEK, or lacquer thinner.-----------

replace the starter and the flywheel-the bad starter has not engaged the teeth on the flywheel fully and has ground some teeth off so you'll fit that space every once in a while-cheers Denny

I have to kickstart my bike for about 10 20 min elecric start just keeps going does not start the engine please how do i fix this

If you are saying the starter just spins and doesnt start the engine then your starter bendits has gone bad and is not kicking out to meet the fly wheel. You while have to remove the starter and have it repaired or replaced.

I've had the same 14.5 Craftsman mower for the past 8 years and have had few serious problems, I was mowing and when i went to turn the mower back on after emptying the grass bags the engine wouldn't...

sounds like your starter is over heating.
1) make sure that there is adequite air flow to the starter and surrounding engine components from the fly wheel.
*in other words no grass or foreign debris obstructing the engine air flow.
2) make sure the batter terminals are good and tight.
3)make sure the starter cyliniod isnt bad.
*and also the wire's to the cyliniod are good tight.

Car starts but sometimes makes a whirling noise. I was told it was the starter

sounds like the starter is not disengaging the fly wheel quickly like it should when you turn the key the starter cog connects upto a fly wheel that has teeth all around it when the teeth of starter cog connect between teen on wheel it spins it to crank your car then goes back to starter if you hold your key on after starting the noise you hear is the starter cog(teeth ) still engaged in wheel if this is the sound it needs to be serviced not neccassarily replaced

Sounds like the starter drive is shot, best thing to do is replace starter with new or rebuild.

2004 Mercury Mountaineer Problem

ok try to turn the engine from the cranshaft pulley with a tool like a socket and ratchet if you are not hable to turn engine by hand then you have an engine problem, and also check if the batterie cables get hot when trying to start if they do the only thing wrong will be a defective starter or an engine problem
