Question about Maytag Refrigerators

2 Answers

Three weeks ago this refrigerator was not cooling. The freezer was cold and seemed to be working. Called local repairman for Maytag and he asked if it was frosting up in freezer. Sure enough when I pulled stuff out of the freezer compartment the vents were totally blocked with icy frost. I turned it off and put a hairdryer in it to melt the ice. It seemed to drip water in the refrigerator but when I started it up again it has worked well since. However I notice the vents seem to be frosting up again and the back of the freezer above the vents seems to have accumulated some frost also. I have not heard it defrost automatically at all. I have looked in the product manual and have come up with nothing as far as trouble shooting this problem. The manual claims it has a defrost timer, beneath the ice maker on the floor of the freezer. I see nothing that would qualify as to that picture. Is this timer inside and out of sight? What could be the problem with the defroster? As of right now the refrigerator seems to be cold enough, however, if much more frost accumulates the vents will again be blocked and the refrigertor will not be working properly.

Where is this so called drain? The back of the refrigerator is solid metal. There is no way to enter it as far as I know.

The drain pan is on the compressor.Exactly above the compressor is drain pan.The water from freezer drain in to that drain pan.In defrost cycle the fan in the freezer runs and blows cold air from freezer to fridge section. And the ice collected on the coil in freezer section starts melting. So the melting ice water gets collected on the pan above the compressor. There is a drain line from freezer towards compressor. The back is metal correct. But you have open the back to see the drain. Other thing, the timer, the timer is most probably located towards the compressor. It all depends upon the refrigerator model number.Just go to sears parts direct online site and insert your exact model number, and select go option. So you will get exact part disassembly diagram for your refrigerator. In that it will exact show the timer location. The defrost timer is not very costly part.----- Also you mentioned that you tried hair dryer option. But actual manual defrost reset procedure is as follows:---- First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. Then its defrost board problem. ------------- If it's again building up ice that means the unit is not defrosting. It's starting the cooling procedure, and then while defrosting, it's not working. ---------- So if the ice build up problem if starts again, you first try defrost reset procedure.

You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

My GE side-by-side is not cooling.

The electronic control board is probably your culprit. These control boards control the compressor, fans and defrost. Look for any burned spots on the printed circuit bout it could be just bad.

Problem with Whirlpool side by side refrigerator (Model ED25RFXFW01). Approximately 6 weeks ago, I found the refrigerator had quit cooling and ice in the ice maker was melting. The top half of the freezer...

sounds like a defrost problem ...
maybe the heater or defrost thermostat is bad...

he should bypass the timer and jump the heater to see if its woking...if not then i would remove the heating element for further testing. if the heater checked ok..it would only leave the defrost timer to blame.

good luck

Refrigerator not cold freezer works fine

You need to have enough food(or items in your freezer),because the cold air is forced over from the freezer into the refrigerator. If it's empty NO cold air will flow to the frig. I called out a repairman & that's all I needed was to stock up.

Frig warm, Freezer Cold

I have experienced this with other refrigerator freezers. The most likely cause is that the warming element in your automatic defrost system is no longer working. Ice is building up on the cooling coils and this prevents the refrigerator from getting cold. I have always called an appliance repairman to fix (~$150). If you're handy you can try yourself, but you still have to buy the part at retail. Good Luck

Regrigerator stopped, now freezer too.

It is due to the defrost timer is not working. Once it is replaced, you should be good for another year. The information is given by the repairman. I have this replaced two days ago. The MayTag part number is: 61005988.
