Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have an OLD Creative Zen MP3 player 32GB with buttons no touch screen (said it was old) running Creative Media Source on Windows XP pc to add/delete tracks and burn CDs but recently can't burn CDs--spits them out saying it can't do it. Wondered if there was a software problem with the program. Or should I reload the program (keep in mind I don't even know how I got the program on the pc it's been that long). just point me in the right direction. Thanks

I only get a message say it wasn't completed or unable to burn CD (can't remember exactly because I am usually too busy throwing another waster disk across the room). And yes it is when transferring tracks from Creative Media Source program (via the player plugged in to pc) to burn a CD through Creative Media Source. I have no other working CD burner on my pc. It seems to burn disks OK when I do them as an MP3 disk and not an audio disk, but the MP3 disks will only play in certain players so that's no good to me. Could it be that my driver is out of date, I have no idea how to update it.

Hi. Sorry about the delay. There is nothing on the Creative website that I can find to download for my specific player to update Creative media Source. The version for Creative Media Source is 2.20.09.

  • djmcdonnell_ May 30, 2011

No, the N400 is a speaker system. I have a Zen Touch. I have been on the Creative website for days and finally found my player myself, but there are no upgrades for my version 2.20.09. You already got my money, but you didn't actually help me. No need for further assistance. I fixed one of my other CD burner software/programs and am using that. This issue is now closed.

What im saying is you can download the Creative media source on that link. It is under the list of N400 but you can disregard the product and download the Media Source. Media source is not listed under ZEN that's why i provided you the link of N400 with the Media Source latest version. Thanks

Firmware update went wrong

What operating system are you using? The Zen Touch firmware update will fail in Vista or 7 -- you need to run the update from an XP install. Once you successfully get the 2.11 firmware on the Touch, it will then interface with those later OS's without difficulty. Also, what version of Windows Media Player are you running? Believe it or not, this makes a BIG difference. The latest Media Player 11 will cause the firmware flash to fail, as will WMP <= 9. I have three separate players that have experienced this problem, including one that had been disassembled THREE YEARS AGO after a failed flash, and was able to resurrect all utilizing this method:

(1) Uninstall everything Creative: the driver, Jukebox, etc. Delete the Creative folder from Program Files. (Some amendment to these instructions may be in order if you have a Creative sound card -- I have built-in Realtek sound so it didn't apply in my case). A restart may or may not be required: go ahead and do so to be safe.

(2) Plug the device in after restart. Windows will want to find drivers for it -- cancel that process. Open the Device Manager. The Touch should come up with an exclamation point next to it (since the drivers were not uninstalled): right-click and select "Uninstall." I have seen instructions on the Web to also uninstall all USB root hubs, but I have found that unnecessary and a pain if you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse. Unplug the device. Restart.

(2) If you are running a version of Windows Media Player not equal to 10, either install 10 (if you have 9 or below) or roll back from 11 if you have that. Restart.

(3) Plug the device back in. My supposition is that this is particular to WMP 10, hence the problems with other versions. The device should pop up as "Creative Zen Touch:" if Windows asks to find drivers, cancel that process, and the device should now come up as an "MTP device."

(4) Since the firmware flash failed, the Zen is probably in recovery mode. Launch the firmware updater software on the computer, and stay at the language selection screen. Choose option 3, "reload firmware," from the recovery menu. It will inform you that it is "deleting old firmware" and then will give you a short period of time with a dialog saying "start firmware update" on the Zen screen. During this time period (about 2 secs), press the language selection of your choice on the computer in order to start the update. It should go through successfully this time.

Go to the Creative support site and upgrade the old MP3 player. The new Player will sync with mediaplayer and you can install music.

Transfrering mucisc CD to ZEN via windows XP

It should use the same software to transfer music, but you may need to update the software to handle the new players firmware. If you are trying to use the old software from the old Zen, it may have some issues with the new player. The software for the newer Zen players is a bit different than older versions.
Does it give you problems ripping CDs or is it not transferring the tracks?
You may want to use Windows Media Player or another software to rip the CDs into mp3 format (I recommend that over other formats because WMA and mp4 are really hardcore with licensing and copying files to other computers.) and then transfer them using the Creative software or another media manager like WMP or Notmad Explorer or one of the many others out there.

If you have any other questions, let me know. I have worked with Creative players a lot over the years.

Cheers

Frozen Zen Touch

I would try a firmware update, if you have a PC running windows xp or vista, check out this link for a firmware download. If this doesn't work, i would consider investing in a new mp3 player, because of course you probably could contact the "Creative" company and get then to fix it, but it'd probably cost about as much as buying a new one....not worth it....the new 80gb zune is very nice...or you could go for another zen product. or ipod...

Zen micro firmware problem

I just got a ZEN Micro 4GB player for free due to Firmware problem. This totally fixed the firmware issue. Windows XP PC with Media Player 10 and the latest driver and firmware from creative. Once I had all that I plugged in my player, let it recognize and then re-flashed to latest firmware. BAM now the play is working perfectly and I can sync music to it. Thanks for the fix.
