Will try that, but cant get to the store till this afternoon. Compressor been in same location working just fine for the last 2 years. How do I get the belt off?

  • jasepelak May 21, 2011

ok, got the belt off [tanks for not helping me with that one]. same problem. saw sparks in the motor. motor spins freely, but when i pulled it apart, there is a large black scorch on the copper wires inside that leads back under the magnets and the twine[?] that bundles the copper wires together is burnt/frayed. Is the motor shot or can this sort of thing be repaired. What type of company would I take it to for repairs. if I have to get a replacement motor, where would I best find one? Come on, help me with something for my $12.

So you don't ask for any clarification, yet are happy to simply suggest i start throwing parts at the problem. I'm off to go get a new motor after searching the online forums and finding my answers, and pricing and finding the motor I need on a Saturday afternoon. This is 3 hours later and after I gave you 3 more updates and more specific information. And you are just not willing to even respond. I came here looking for info and FixYa gave me an unresponsive tool [you]. Thanks for nothing. I didn't have an opinion of your website this morning, but i sure do now, and I plan to share my experience [or lack thereof] with everyone I know. You ****.

Replace the capacitor on the motor. Dont take the one on it off without writing down the wire positions.

First replace the breaker to see if that will correct it. Some breakers will get faults before others especially 220 to 230 breakers. Make sure the AMP RATING matches
If your breaker has a lower amp rating than the compressor it will throw the breaker everytime you use it too

Compressor started to like zap when it would cycle on, then started to sometimes trip the breaker, and suddenly trips breaker everytime it trys to start

Its trying very hard to tell you its faulty & needs to be replaced... You could wait until it blows up in your face. That way it wont LIKE ZAP anymore

I have a ingersoll rand 30, srats for 20seconds then trips breaker,,,runs great when running

Sounds like the unit is pulling to many amps during start up. Possibilities are: breaker under sized, wire under sized, to long of a run of wire from breaker for wire size,Tank check valve bad. I would check the amps during start up and while running and compare to motor name plate information. Remember at start up the motor may pull 1.5 to 2 times the rated amps on the name plate. Also if this unit has a magnetic starter wire connections may be loose or overloads to small.

I believe that the motor starter circuit on my Ingersoll Rand 2475 5 hp 80 gallon compressor is incorrect. It's a 30 amp single phase compressor

You should not be pulling over 30 amps. If you are you may have low voltage, incorrect wire size or to long of a run for wire size. I would use a hand held meter and check the amps at full load.

Ingersall-Rand T 30 Model 2340 Motor overload trips when trying to fill air tank. How long should it take to fill the tank with air with tank empty. If tank is full it may cycle one time when using air.

You need to know the size of the tank before you can figure pump up time from empty to full. It sounds like you have a bad tank check valve. A bad check valve typically causes the motor overload to trip when starting.

The compressor trip at main breaker

possible causes , do not use ext. cord on compressor unless it's HEAVY gauge, also if you have any thing else running on the same breaker, It might cause it to pull too much power.

IF YOUR PRETTY SURE DRAW A CAPACITOR WIRING DIAGRAM AND THEN TAKE YOUR CAPACITORS TO ANY MOTOR SHOP OR SUPPLY HOUSE LIKE WW GRAINGER. THEY CAN CHECK THE MICROFARRADS OR UNIFARRADS OF YOUR CAPACITORS. YOUR START CAPACITORS HAVE THE LARGER MF OR UF RATING AND ARE TYPICALLY LARGER IN SIZE. YOUR P.O.S. INGERSOL RAND MAY EVEN BE A 3500 RPM MOTOR AND COULD HAVE UP TO 5 CAPACITORS. 3 OF WHICH ARE START. IS YOUR WIRE LARGE ENOUGH? IS YOUR BREAKER LARGE ENOUGH? IS YOUR COMPRESSOR UNLOADING THE HEAD PRESSURE WHEN IT CUTS OFF? IS IT OUTSIDE AND TOO COLD IN THE MORNINGS? MAKE SURE YOUR WIRING IS LARGE ENOUGH BECAUSE THAT IS USUALLY THE PROBLEM. YOU HAVE SINGLE PHASE BUT IS YOUR VOLTAGE CORRECT 208V OR 230 V. ALL WIRING AND GAUGING CHARTS ARE BASED ON 100 FT OF WIRE . MOST COMPRESSORS PULL 3 TIMES THE AMP RATING ON INITIAL STARTUP THEN COM DOWN TO AMPS LISTED ON THE MOTOR.
