yes the evap fan in the frezer should be running when the compressor is running[it may not for a minute or so as it starts up.Amana's are good for the connectors at the evap fan motor comming apart.the connectors are white and will look like its together but when you pull it will come apart.i would always cut the connector out and use a wire nut so wont happen again.if any other questions please email thru FixYa and i will be glad to help. SOURCE: refrigerator section not getting cold - air vents

Evaporator fan may not be running. This fan distributes cold air throughout the freezer and to the refrigerator. The fan is likely located behind an access plate at the top of the freezer. If it's running, you should be able to hear it. If you can't hear it, open the access plate and look at it. If it's not turning, you will likely have to replace the fan motor.

SOURCE: Both top sections fridge/freezer of my side by side are not cold

Sounds like a defrost problem. Remove food from freezer section, take the back wall out after removing shelves, and use a hair blower to melt off the ice and frost. Most likely you need to replace the defrost heater.

SOURCE: GE side by side. Top shelf in fridge warm. bottom

Hi, I'm Mark.
Check the position of the two controls at the top of the unit inside the fresh food compartment. SET BOTH controls to the 12 o'clock position. Wait about a hour, then check temperatures. Then wait another hour and check temperatures again. Record the values on a piece of paper. When you do check fridge temperatures, do so quickly as the compartments become warm just a few seconds after the doors are opened. Please let me know what happens to the fresh food readings.
Thanks, Best Regards,
Mark

ok,when you open the freezer door do you hear the fan blowing?all that happens is the freezer gets cold,a fan in the back wall of the freezer turns on and blows cold air up into the fridge section,a thermostat tells it when it's cold enough or it's getting warm then it will blow more air up top,if the freezer is working correctly then either the fan isn't working or the bottom freezer door was left open, warm air got sucked up into the air vents causing water droplets to be formed, then they freeze blocking the air vents with ice and now the cold air can't go into the fridge section.is there any ice on the ceiling of the freezer or frozen water droplets on the bags in the freezer?if so the door was left open.unplug the maction, and with a hair dryer blow the hot air into the holes on the back panel, keep doing this until you don't see any more water draining through the holes, turn it back on and see if the cold air is blowing up into the fridge.if the evap fan motor is bad the part number is W10128551 and it's around 25 to 30 dollars.you must of got the model number off of the book,it's not the full model number, check in the fridge section on the right hand wall near the ceiling and you should see a tag with the number on it.also down at the bottom kickplate, you can remove the kickplate and there should be a tech sheet tucked away in it,read it and it will tell you how to put the machine into defrost mode,if you can do this, instead of unplugging it if you have to melt it out with the hair dryer you can put it into defrost so the heater will come on and this will help you to defrost the vents quicker.let me know what you find and if you need any more help.good luck with your machine

if you can hear the fan still blowing but no cold air coming up to fridge section a common problem with bottom mount freezers is the door gets left open and the air ducts freeze up and the air can't blow up to the top.turn the control off in the freezer.remove the top shelf and the door, check to see if there are any screws one on each side of the slide arms,if there are remove them and lift the door up and out, with a hair dryer melt out the ice by blowing the hot air up each side of the back wall, also if the back inside wall of the freezer is covered with ice or like snow then you have a defrost problem but if there's no ice on back wall do what i said and blow the air up the sides of the back wall through the vents until no more water is seen dripping through the vent holes, then turn the freezer back on and check to see if you feel cold air blowing in through the vents in the fridge section,if you feel cold air then you're all set,if not keep blowing the hot air up the sides until it's melted out.let me know what you find, you'll know if the door was left open, ice will be on the ceiling near the light switch and sometimes on the top of the freezer door.
However if fan has quit totally then it will have to be replaced since it is responsible for cooling the upper part of the fridge

The Refrigerator does not get cool but freezer works fine

Make sure that you are not overloading the top shelf of the refrigerator section. There is a small vent near the top where cold air blows in. You should also be able to hear a fan blowing as well when the compressor is running. The fan will be easier to hear when the freezer door is open. If you can't hear the fan, likely the motor has gone out and the cold air is not circulating like it needs to be.

Refrigerator not working but freezer is

You have two vents between the freezer and fridge. The one the cold air from the freezer comes through(blown by the fan) and the other vent is a return vent back to the freezer. On a side/side they're at the top and bottom. It sounds like the bottom one may be blocked by food or frosted closed by ice.

My bottom fridge is not getting cold but my top freezer works

The air circulation is neede to prevent this Make sure it's the freezer fan you hear running.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper)between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air throughit. There is a flap you adjust with thefridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust thefridge temp ..
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezerare icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation ofcold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. Inmost newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicksand everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replacethe timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn thetimer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Cold freezer/warm refrigerator

Same problem with Frigidaire Gallery model#GLRT182SAW5 (dated 2002 on back of case)

Vents were blocked with ice. Vents (from top compartment to lower) located behind light. You can check by poking a chopstick up the (2) holes; be careful not to hit fan blades.

Solution:

- took freezer coil cover off in back; checked that defrost heater element was working (marked and rotated the timer in the hole next to light); checked that fan working. Found ice in the vents and defrost drip area. Got it out with hair dryer.

- cleaned compressor coils in back (check fan is rotating; also tweaked some of the compressor tubing bends to make them more smooth - read somewhere about a manufacturing defect ...); blew out drip tube from defroster while down there.

- Set the freezer control to WARM and the refrig control to COLD (THIS SHOULD IMPROVE AIR FLOW FROM TOP TO BOTTOM).

- Put thermometers in top and bottom. Checked that refrigerator cycles (not running continuously). Checked that cold air is coming down from (2) vents behind light.

OK: so far, so good. Lower compartment is 40 or under. Top is under 18.

CONCLUSION: Suspect marginal design. Had problems with another similar model where defroster ice doesn't drain correctly, pools and refreezes. Leading to blocked vents as well as blocked defroster drain and similar problem including dripping water from top to bottom and warm bottom.

MAYBE KEEPING THE FREEZER CONTROL AT WARM GETS AROUND THE PROBLEM?? ANYWAY, ITS WORKING FOR ME FOR NOW !!

Freezer working fine, but Refrigerator no longer cooling

Sounds like there's an airflow problem to the top section. Things that cause no cold air to the top fridge section are... frozen up coils completely blocking most of air flow (defrost cycle not working), evap fan not working to blow air up to fridge, air control dampers in fridge closed or not working properly, or frozen air ducts supply/return. Pull the whole drawer out the bottom and take the rear inside back off to expose the coils. If they are frozen solid the defrost t-stat or defrost timer could be bad (heat element not usually bad). If there is a nice white frost all over evenly then that's OK. Check that the fan is running when the compressor is running to blow the air up and that there are no blocked air ducts, etc. If all that is good, check if you can feel good air flow from the upper vents with the lower door closed (that shows there is no blockage and the fan is running).
