Defrost control board is in the top of the refrigerator behind the two levers that control the temperature. You have to take off the plastic cover. There are two screws and then you slide to cover to the side to remove. The board is in a white plastic housing.

Defrost timer location

Hello Darren;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You did not provide a model number of your unit. The model number is located on a label on the upper inside wall of your fresh food section. So I can only be general.

1.) Control Board - Many of the defrost cycle modes are programed into the main control board.

2.) Mechanical Defrost Timer - Some units with the controls on the top in the fresh food section have a mechanical timer. Here, it is a hole on the left. Using a large flat head screw driver you can trip the timer, turning clockwise one click at a time.

Notice the slotted hole on the left.

Does my fridge have a defrost timer? The first time the fridge quit working we had a repair person come figure out. He found the circulation fan was frozen in the back panel inside the fridge. He turned...

This is a very common problem with Samsung refrigerators especially the type that has two evaporators. The evaporator that is inside the fresh food section and will usally give people the most problems. The drain below the evaporator in the fresh food section will begin to freeze over or become blocked by gunk inside the drain line. When this happens it causes the fresh food section to retain water because with the drain blocked the moisture and defrost condensate water now have nowhere to go. Once that drain is blocked the freezing over of the evaporator will begin to happen more often slowing down defrost which again make problems worse. Clean the drain, make sure the refrigerator is level and confirm the model number of your refrigerator. Your model has no defrost timer and defrost are determined by the motherboard. There is a way to force defrost with your model from the motherboard but until the drain is cleaned out defrost will not help much because the water has no where to go but to freeze over the evaporator and fan area of the fresh food section evaporator. First I want you to look into back of the freezer compartment. If ice is building up on the rear wall we have a defrost problem. But the way you explained it sounds more like the auto damper part number Click Here=> 61005971 where there is no photo and in photo # 8 here=> MZD2766GEQ Fresh Food Section Contros We need to test it first by doing this test aslisted on section2-10 or in scroll bar at top of page 38. Click here=> MZD2766GEQ Behind the back wall of the Model MZD2766GES Freezer Compartment the defrost heater and defrost thermostat are in photo and listed in photo as part 12. That part needs to be check with an ohm meter to see if that is stopping defrost. Click here for that part Number 61006199 I would like you to see the parts breakdown Click Here=> MZD2766GES Freezer Compartment The most likely reason for this happening is and fresh food section is here=> MZD2766GES Fresh Food Section and part 13 in photo is 13 and that Part Number is Click Here=> 61005988 Adaptive Defrost
If you have questions please contact me here on Fixya or through my Web Site=> Appliance 911 Hope this was helpful, Sea Breeze

Fridge stopped working/ freezer still works great?

the freezer works ok..this is where the cooling unit is..so, if the freezer works ..its not blowing or allowing air to flow into fresh food area..if its missed its defrost..it will not allow air to go into fresh food area and you need to remove panel and defrost coils ..or see if blower is working...check for bad heater or defrost thermostat or what controls defrost ie timer or board

Kenmore ref. model#253.74879401 wont cool above 49 degrees

Good day,
Many possibilities.
1. Light stays on when door is closed. You should be able to see the lights go out just before the door closes. If not sure, remove bulbs and run machine for 12+ hours to test.
2. Defrost system failed. Frost should be apparent on the rear panel of the freezer panel. If so, remove rear rear panel and inspect for excessive frost build up.
The defrost system is made up of 3 parts. The main heater( a calrod unit similar to the bake unit in an electric range). could be burned out.
A defrost thermostat mounted on the top of the evaporator in the same compartment. Another item that can fail.
The timer ( either a standard timer or an electronic version, mounted in the top (ceiling) of the fresh food compartment.
If you have a VOM meter, and have knowledge in this area, you can test the first 2 items, but not the last.
Removing these parts and taking them to an appliance parts house for testing is the other option.

3. The fan motor in the freezer must run to supply air to the fresh food compartment. Remove freezer rear panel and inspect.

4. If everything above checks out positively, then the last item has been an issue with this machine.
Ice builds up in the supply and return air chutes. Impossible to see as a rule, and requires the machine to be unplugged, both doors left open for 24 hours.

5. Make sure freezer control is set to mid range, not the cold position. This control is a damper which shares the air from the freezer to the fresh food compartment. At it's coldest setting, it allows too little air to the fresh food compartment.

Freezer and fresh food section are both at room temperature.

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

NOT COOLING

Most likely your defrost system has failed. Most times it's in the control area of the system and that part will depend on the model number. The control part would most likely be the defrost timer or Adaptive defrost control board most times you find the timer or ADC inside the fresh food section and behind the controls for the temperature. And sometimes it's the defrost heater and defrost thermostat located behind the rear panel in the back of your freezer. Fact is you may be able to open the freezer door and look at that back wall and see frost clinging to the rear wall. If yes the unplug remove the rear panel in freezer and defrost with a hair dryer and lets look over the defrost heater and defrost element or use a OHM meter to test the parts. Sometimes you will see the heater burned out. Get me your model number most times on the front of the refrigerator and down near floor and behind the fresh food section door. Let me know what you find, Sea Breeze

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Frige is warm but freezer is fine! Kenmore Stainless 596.72913200

Hello , I can help. You can ohm the heater out to ensure its ok it should read very low res. less than 20 probably , you would be lucky to have a defrost timer in this unit most of these now have electronic defrost control boards that fail often , to find out which one you have take the control cover in the upper/fresh food settings area at top off and there should be a 3" by 4" small control board or a def. timer that's white or black with a harness connected to it that has 4 wires.

If you have a def. timer there is a dial you can turn until it clicks once and set it to defrost to test the cycle , if the defrost is working at this point this means the timer has quit and is not timing any longer you will need to replace the defrost timer.

If you have a control board this is most commonly the problem , replace the defrost board and you should be good to go. If you have any problems let me know , good luck. Phil
