This is a messy frustrating job, and if you had to put a price on the hassle that it is, it is probably better to pay somebody else to do it. That said, remove the starter cover with the cord and pulley inside. If there is a plate holding down the cord pulley, remove it and carefully lift out the pulley, try not to dislodge the recoil spring as this is where the frustration part comes in. Remove the old cord and insert the new cord end into the hole and copy the old knot - pass the other end of the cord through the eyelet in the cover. N.B. At this time take note of the direction that the recoil spring coil is orientated. Wind about 3/4 of the cord around the pulley and attach the start handle to the outside end of the cord. Carefully fit the pulley over the spring and place the cord into the cutout in the pulley. Wind up the pulley so that it engages in the curl in the inside of the recoil spring and further wind up the pulley in the opposite direction of the normal pulley start pull, holding the cord in the little cut-out so that the cord does not wind up as you wind the spring. It probably takes about 5 extra turns on the pulley to get the recoil tension right. Always hold the pulley in place to prevent the spring from jumping out. Release the cord so it can retract and replace the retaining plate. This is all if the spring does not jump out - which it so often does.
If the spring jumps out, hold it by the inside portion and start winding it up, pulling it tight to keep the coil small enough to fit back into its receptacle, . Once the spring is wound up and will fit into its position the problem starts. I found that gripping the spring with an alligator jaw vice grip will allow you to replace the spring and carefully release it without it going wild again, engaging the outer hook in its retaining slot or around its peg. Trying to feed the spring into position coil by coil seldom works, it has to be wound up outside and then inserted, especially on a small motor.
This procedure is as difficult to explain as it is to carry out. I have done many cord replacements and always dread the next one. Please rate this solution and if you have any problems, feel free to come back to me.

Take the starter assembly off the mower. Unwind the spool using whatever method works (2 screwdrivers?) until you capture the remaining. cord. Pull it all the way out. Pin the spool so that it can't retract. Remove and replace the cord. Re-assemble. Back to cutting grass!

Replacing pull cord on craftsman model 917-379470

Michele, first make sure there is enough cord left for a good pull. Slightly burn the end to melt it and stop it fraying when it goes back in. Turn the assembly over and wind it manualy anti clockwise until it stops due to the spring being tight. Ask someone to thread the cord through the hole on the top of the assembly and push it through until it comes out the other side. When its through put a knot in the end and then get your help to pull it back through. Release the thing with the spring slowly and it should pull the cord back in for you. This should fix it.

The pull cord on my Cub Cadet OHV 173cc self propelled mower broke.. I'm somewhat handy and should be able to fix it myself, however I've never done this before. I have the engine housing...

Yeah I got the same problem. My pull cord broke in the first season. On my own once the plastic cover is removed, 4 phillips screws, the cord housing is secured by 3 10mm nuts. Remove them and lift out the housing. On my own unit the spring had also slipped out of the mount on the shaft securing the assembly (another 10mm socket nut will loosen that). I used a Briggs and Stratton cord from another (truly dead) mower and have had no problems since then. I am not sure why folks are giving you spark plug settings when you are asking about the cord. :)

I have a craftsman push weedeater and the pull cord broke and I want to know how to reinstall so the cord so it will work. I have taken the cover off and fixed the cord and put everything back together but...

you will need to pull the shroud back off, turn shroud upside down, wind it up and with a screwdriver or another pair of hands thread the cord back through, tie a knot and burn it, let go of the it, it will wind the cord back in, pull on it a few times and make sure it is working, then reinstall. Hope this helped Tim

I have a yard machines 31cc y28 17'' how do I fix the pull string it is pulled out fully

Take the top cover off, You should then see 4 bolts around the engine cover, take these out and the cord head will come of,Depending on where the cord broke is the question of using the same cord, But if you're getting a new cord you will need to thread the cord into the eye for the cord, Tie a knot to prevent it pulling apart. then tie your handle on. After this you will wind the cord up tight on the pulley and a screw driver holding the pulley from moving while you put the cord and cap back on the engine, You can then start back installing the bolts and the other cover..

The rope does not retract when the cord is pulle... how do I fix it

Has the cord been replaced? If so, when the old one broke, the spring will completely unwind. The trick is to rewind the spring first, attach the new cord and wind it around the spool while holding the spring tension. After the cord is wound, feed the end out through the cord port and test for good return (don't let go!!), then clamp the cord with locking pliers and affix the handle to the cord. Melting the cord ends helps keep the knots from pulling out. Hope this helps!
